Firstly, it's recommended that you make sure every one of your motherboard drivers are completely up-to-date, but you probably already knew that.

In XP, after a USB port isn't used for a long while the USB driver built into the OS sets the OHCI controller to suspend. When you plug a device back in, it can sometimes fail to 'wake up' properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 but there is a related registry hack that may still be able to help.

Run regedt32.exe and navigate to;

HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb

Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC.

A long shot perhaps, but I recall having similar problems with a USB hub built into my Microsoft keyboard and adding this key seemed to solve it. It wouldn't hurt in trying cannot recognize usb port - icon_smile.png.

Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack.

Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software. Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure 'Show hidden devices' is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order;

1. USB peripheral devices (printers etc.)

2. HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) You're using PS/2 input devices so you may not have this entry.

3. USB Root Hub(s)

4. USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers)

Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in, starting with your powered hub. Be aware that most USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in.

Hopefully some of this may be of help, let us know how you get on.

I can't set up my printer to my lap top with windows xp

Are you able to set it up on another machine? If so, and it works ok, then you are looking at the laptop not having the appropriate drivers installed. Install it from the cd. If the software seems to be installed, does the laptop not recognize the printer when you turn the printer on with it plugged into the usb port? Could be bad port or the USB port manager needs to be reinstalled.

  • Troubleshooting Setup and Install If your device is not recognized:
    • Verify that your cable is USB 2.0 high-speed compliant.
    • Ensure that your cable is connected correctly. Remove the USB cable, look at the end of the cable, and then match it to the pattern on the USB port. Make sure that it is not upside down. Insert one end of the USB cable completely into the USB port on the HP device and the other end into the back of the computer.
    • Check that the peripheral is turned on. Peripherals will not be recognized if the power is off.
    • Ensure that your USB cable is no more than 15 feet or 5 meters in length.
    • Check that the USB port is enabled. Some computers ship with disabled USB ports.
III. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS When operating in a Windows environment, the CD-ROM setup or installation software detects the version of the operating system that you are running. The software is installed in the language that you have selected. For example, if you are running an English version of Windows and have the language preference set to Spanish, the installation utility will install the Spanish version of the printing software for the appropriate Windows version. INSTALLATION OPTIONS Two methods are available for installing printer drivers and software components for the printer.

Printer is not working.

Your computer should pop up and tell you that you've installed a new piece of equipment anytime you plug something into the USB port, since most peripherials are plug and play. If not, then it doesn't recognize the printer. You may have a bad USB port. Try plugging the wire into a different USB port during the installation process.

With Brother, you have to use their installation CD and follow their instructions. You can't hook up the wires till *after* the CD has walked you through their installation process.

Try reinstalling using their CD and a new USB port to see if it will work now.

I keep getting error message when i try to install my mfc665cw all in one printer usb device not recognized has malfunctioned windows doesnt recognized

With any unresponsive USB devices in XP it is always a good idea to try removing the device first with uninstall, plug it into a different USB port, and then reinstall the setup software. (Preferrably using a version from the vendors home-site instead of the original CD.)

This will do two things:
  1. It will make sure that you are running the most up-to-date version of the installation software and driver.
  2. It will keep Windows from trying to "put back" the same settings that are causing you issues.

USB port problems with hp printer

There are few things to remember using USB.
  • If your System is in hybernation mode, don't remove any attached USB device, because it will damage your USB driver. This is one of the known problem from microsoft.
  • If you have to remove any USB device use 'Safely Remove Hardware'.

To remove currepted USB drivers its not enough to remove your printer drivers.
  1. You should un-install the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' from Device Manager.
  2. Then re-boot to clean registry.
  3. Install the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' using XP Setup CD.
  4. Then check the Mass storage, PDA etc, it should recognized by XP.
  5. Then install printer driver (don't attach printer to system untill setup finish or setup says to connect).

I think it will fix.
Please let me know your feed-back.

Thanks
Iqbal
