I always recommend that you use the hood / vent fan whenever cooking on the stove top. That can help keep steam out of the controls.

Also, I always recommend that users spray cleaner on a soft cloth (not on the keypad itself) then wipe the control panel off.

I recommend a soft cloth since paper towels can scratch the plastic.

Also, I always recommend non-ammonia cleaners since ammonia can crack and damage plastic.

Otherwise, the spray can get into the controls and lock it up or make it act odd.

If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Thereshould also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind thecontrol panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which isvery helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you would like to have us do this for you, we do that for $39.95 plus part costs.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you need more help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

but can not program unit, Touchpad dead If you have a stuck key or non-responsive key, most of the time you will have to replace the keypad for this microwave oven repair. If your keypad is connected to your control board by a flat ribbon wire, try disconnecting it and clean the silver contacts with an ordinary pencil eraser. After cleaning, plug it back in and try it. If it doesn't fix it, replace the keypad unit. Some units actually have keypad tests to confirm your diagnosis of a bad key.If your keypad and control is the same unit, replace that unit. Another note, unlike stove/oven keypads and controls, most microwaves do not have error codes or tests to distinguish whether it is truely the keypad or control. Most of the time, it is the keypad that needs replacing, but a small percentage of the time it can be the control. Check the tech sheet if they can point you to the right part.

Buttons on LG microwave have stopped working

The keypad control board has probably failed, only option is replacement, but part alone is $97. or more, maybe cheaper to replace the unit.

I have GE Profile microwave model PVM1870SM1SS and last week while running, suddently it shut off. There is no power, display buttons and stopped running. Please advise.

From the description a major part has failed, the magnetron is suspect because it suddenly shut down in cycle, if the unit is less than 7 years old it probably has a inverter board and tends to fail, also there is the possibility the keypad control board has stopped working. The microwave in my opinion is worth getting checked out and repaired, but it will be expensive.

Worth fixing 9 yr old unit? Told the keypad going bad. Often powered off/on to reset is required. Expensive repair?Complicated? I am quite handy if part swap is an option. I recall hearing a microwave is...

Hi - I really do not like to condemn any machine however microwaves have become very inexpensive - more efficient - quieter and packed with more features than ever before for a reasonable price. If you are handy unplug the unit and remove the front panel (a few screws ) at the keypad to expose the keypad harness, please check the harness connection. It is not uncommon for a keypad to fail. If the keypad still fails I advise purchasing a new machine simply because the parts, shipping etc will likely exceed the pro rated value of your machine. I know it is hard to let go sometimes but in the case of old microwaves it is generally wise. Microwaves can last well over 10 years. The good news is you will be getting a warranty with your new one should you decide to go in that direction. Hope its the harness, Sincerely Brian

GE JVM1540 keypad only works for some buttons

Membrane keypads are not very durable, and do fail after a relatively short time.

The only method is to replace them as a spare part.

Keypad going out

The main reason door switches go out is by opening the door while it's cooking, instead of hitting the STOP button first. Otherwise, like anything man made, they can fail. And for safety's sake, they should all be replaced when one is bad. If a keypad is failing repeatedly, I would suspect outside contamination or an inherently bad design. But I've not before heard of repeated keypad replacement. Moisture and contamination can be caused by not using the hood fan when boiling on the stove top, spraying of cleaners, by storing the microwave in an unheated garage or shed, or infestation. I warn my customers to never spray cleaner directly onto the microwave keypad, since the liquid can get inside and "lock up" or even ruin the keypad or controller. Apply an alcohol-based cleaner (such as the purple kind) to a cloth (paper towels can scratch) and gently wipe it off. I suggest to my customers that they NEVER use any ammonia-based cleaner (like the blue stuff) on a microwave, since the ammonia will crack and distort polycarbonate plastics. Hope this helps.
