Tell me the steps to install my magic jack to my laptop

Hi,

When you receive your package in the mail, open it up and you will have three items: the USB plug-in device, a short USB extension cord and a telephone cord. Follow these steps for you to be able to install magic jack on your laptop.

1. Plug the device into your computer's USB port and it will automatically start downloading and installing some software that you need to be able to make calls. If the device doesn't fit in the area where your USB port is on your computer, then you can use the extension cord that was included in your package to hook up the device.

2. Another option is to use an a/c powered USB hub to plug it into. Using an a/c powered USB hub is recommended over using the extension cord, as it will save you from having some problems in the future.

3. You will also be able to visit the official website for this voip phone if you are having problems getting it to work all of the time. There are downloads available that are called "magic fixes" that will help the device work better with your computer.

4. Now all you need to do is to plug in any regular land line type phone into the device. The phone line that came with the device is best to use as it is recommended not to use a phone cord that is over 6 feet long. This is all it takes to install Magic Jack so you can start making free long distance calls.

Hope this will help...Thank you for using Fixya...

I am getting a power surge in my usb port with my

This is usually the case if you have too many items plugged into USB ports.

If you have a USB hub plugged in then ensure it has its OWN power supply or try remove some items and your problems should go away.

Error message keeps popping up about a usb error -- there are no items plugged into a usb port on the laptop! How do I stop this error message from popping up?

Try uninstalling the USB root hubs from the device manager and restart computer...this should resolve the issue. else try doing a BIOS update.

When I plug a wireless cable into a USB port, the computer tells me that there are High speed USB ports available but does not inform where to find them.

Right-Click on My Computer, Properties, Device Manager, then Click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers, u will see the USB port available on your computer there. Also, at the same time you are doing this, try checking all the USB ports on your computer...most times, the HIGH-Speed USB Ports (USB 2.0) are always seperated from the other USB ports...so try the USB port seperated from others.
In your own case, Acer TravelMate 2303LCi has just 3 USB slots, a PC card slot, modem and network slot. No floppy drive, no TV-out, no IR, no Wi-Fi. So check-out USB Ports, the USB port infront of the Laptop beside the Audio Port and and the Speaker, on the extreme-right is your USB 2.0 High-Speed Port.

How do i find what version my usb ports are i think 2.0 and if a something specifies usb 1.1 how can i revert them back is this an issue?

If your machine is less than 3 years old then the ports are definatly USB 2.0. These are 100% compatable with all USB 1 devices so you won't have any problems. The quickest way to check is through the BIOS. Just hit delete a few times on startup to enter the menu. You could also connect what you know is a USB 2 device i.e ipod or something. If a window pops up telling you the device can run faster then you only have USB1. If you don't get this then it's USB 2

USB ports wont recognize anything I plug in

Are you using XP? If so:
Here is what you can do to refresh the USB ports:
1. Right click MY COMPUTER
2. Select PROPERTIES
3. Select HARDWARE
4. Select DEVICE MANAGER
5. Select UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
6. Right click on each USB CONTROLLER and select Uninstall
7. Uninstall all entries
8. Reboot your computer
9. As your computer re-boots it will reinstall all USB connections it detects
THEN, when all other USB items have been configured and connected by the system, you then should try connecting your USB device.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Acer 5580 Bluetooth and USB port problem

There may be a bent connector on one of the USB ports or a defective USB controller on the motherboard. The bluetooth connector may not have been reconnected or the bluetooth module was not reinstalled after service. Sadly you will need to have it serviced again. They most likely will not replace it it with a new laptop, but maybe a refurbished one. You could push for a warranty extension for amount of time the system has been due to need of repair. Good Luck.

Usb port overload

difficult to diagnose...do not know of a "trick"...although one solution is to get a PCMCIA card (they are getting very inexpensive now) that has 2 USB ports...you can add a USB hub from one of them to again have 4 or more ports.
