I have purchased a Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive (80 GB) today. However, I cannot see the HD getting connected to my laptop.I have connected both the connectors to my laptop for power and data as instructed. I am having a Compaq presario V2000 laptop with Windows XP.
Kindly help. I have a Maxtor Basics 160gb - was using it happily connected to my laptop for a month, suddenly it won't work. Have tried in on my desktop, also won't work - the computer just doesn't see the drive. nothing changed, I didn't even move the hard drive off the desk. All my accounting data plus a half-written book, photos etc all on the drive and of course no backup. I've spoken to a data recovery company, minimum charge of $750 to retrieve data, just not possible for me right now. Has anyone had any luck with this issue?
Well, data recovery service is pretty expensive. In your case the MOST effective way is to try some so-called data recovery software. See if you can grab some of your precious data back.
First of ALL - Connect your hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.

Buy a cheap external hard drive USB case for around $20 and disassemble the old external and place the hard drive from it into the new case. Make sure you take the old hard drive out first so you know what kind of case to buy, SATA,IDE,ect... In most cases like this the problem is caused by a failure in the external cases controller unit. If you can see the drive under device manager, right click on the drives properties then go to the Volumes tab. If no data displays there press the populate button. This should then force windows to assign a drive letter to your drive.
If it does not appear under device manager then you might want to check the cables to see if the USB or Power cables are damaged.
If that's not the case and you still have problems with windows detecting your HDD then it's damaged.
