Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

Hi,
I have purchased a Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive (80 GB) today. However, I cannot see the HD getting connected to my laptop.I have connected both the connectors to my laptop for power and data as instructed. I am having a Compaq presario V2000 laptop with Windows XP.
Kindly help. I have a Maxtor Basics 160gb - was using it happily connected to my laptop for a month, suddenly it won't work. Have tried in on my desktop, also won't work - the computer just doesn't see the drive. nothing changed, I didn't even move the hard drive off the desk. All my accounting data plus a half-written book, photos etc all on the drive and of course no backup. I've spoken to a data recovery company, minimum charge of $750 to retrieve data, just not possible for me right now. Has anyone had any luck with this issue?

Well, data recovery service is pretty expensive. In your case the MOST effective way is to try some so-called data recovery software. See if you can grab some of your precious data back.

First of ALL - Connect your hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem! Remember - Always make multi-Backups of your precious data!

I am a data rescue expert! I have all the software to retrieve your data and I can send it to you for free and walk you through the steps. There is also a simple solution you can try yourself. Buy a cheap external hard drive USB case for around $20 and disassemble the old external and place the hard drive from it into the new case. Make sure you take the old hard drive out first so you know what kind of case to buy, SATA,IDE,ect... In most cases like this the problem is caused by a failure in the external cases controller unit. As you say you never dropped it this is most likely the cause of your problem and this simple solution will have you up and running. If You still have problems you can contact me at geokohler@gmail.com and we will escalate this to the next level. I can get your Data back for sure. I have been retrieving data since hard drives started crashing, around 1984. No matter what I will help you get your data back. I do this for a hobby as I'm retired at 42 and I already have all the money I will ever need, So I won't charge you anything for my help. I just like helping people, I know how it feels to lose work to hard disk failure. I have back ups of my back ups now in 3 separate locations so it has not happened to me in 10 years. If you would like a free call send me your number in the E-mail and a short description so I know which problem I'm helping with. Write hard disk crash in the subject line. I hope you find this helpful. If you need my personal help feel free to ask for it.

Hello,

If you can see the drive under device manager, right click on the drives properties then go to the Volumes tab. If no data displays there press the populate button. This should then force windows to assign a drive letter to your drive.

If it does not appear under device manager then you might want to check the cables to see if the USB or Power cables are damaged.
If that's not the case and you still have problems with windows detecting your HDD then it's damaged.

Hope this helped.

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

Right Click on My Computer, click on Manage, go to Disk Managment, if the drive is available you will see it there. Check to see if it has a drive letter assigned to it, if not right click on it and choose Change Drive letters. Make sure you are on the external drive though, you don't want to change your C drive accidentally. It should pop up in My Computer.

I have a Western digital model wd2500b007-rnn
and I cannot get either my PC or my laptop to recognize the drive. I isolated the drive to another computer with the same error. It says USB device not reognized. I also tried a different port. I have not tried different cables. Can I retrieve the old data on the drive?

Did you find a resolution for this? I am having the same problem. None of my PCs can recognize the drive. Formatting seems to be the only choice but I need to recover my old data first.
