Bernina Buttonhole foot #3A

My Bernina buttonhole foot #3A for my 1130 has stopped working. I tried cleaning the lens but that didn't solve the problem. The closest dealer (1 hour away) quoted me a price of $127 for a new foot. Do you think the old one can be repaired or will I have to take out a loan to buy a new one?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Buttonhole Foot 3A on my Bernina 1530. Cool cookie - could you tell me what the instructions say? I lost my instructions, but had it working fine until I lost the instructions. Now to get going, I need my instructions again and maybe in the process, I can help you.

Hi, you must have an 1130S which means it could also be a circuitboard issue. If the LED/LCD light for the buttonholer does not flash you either need a new RET-Print (circuitboard) or a new buttonhole foot. Sorry to say that you DO more than likely need a new buttonhole foot according to my manual on this machine. No way to repair the foot that I know of.
You should bring the machine in and try it first.
Guess not all news is good news. Sorry.

I would like to add that often when a buttonhole foot or procedure isn't acting right often the cure is to have it calibrated to the machine. There are filters techs have for Bernina 200's and below that fit betwen the foot and the sensor above that need to be used. Berninas above the 200 don't need the filter but still need to be calibrated to the foot. You cannot just move a buttonhole foot like a 3A from machine to machine without eventually needing recalibration. Actually its the machine that calibrates to the foot. This needs to be done through the service program by a tech.or one willing to walk you through it.

For my Bernina 1130, the automatic buttonhole maker would sew the first bead then the bar tack, and then stick. Turns out the prism in the foot doesn't work if the light over the needle isn't on. Changing out the bulb on the machine light fixed the problem. Also you need to thread the little finger on the bobbin case or buttonholer doesn't work right.

How do I make a buttonhole on a Bernina 1130 s

First of all, pull the bobbin thread thru the bobbin case finger before starting. There is a good explanation in the manual, p. 42-45. Use either the 3 or 3A Buttonhole foot. If you don't have a manual, go to http://danreetz.com/bernina/Bernina_1130_User_Manual.pdf and download and/or read.

I am trying to make a buttonhole using the buttonhole foot and everytime i go to sew the machine beeps and will not let me sew?

if you have a automatic buttonhole , then you should have a buttonhole lever that you have to pull down, before you start to do the buttonhole,, my machine will not let me do a buttonhole unless I pull down the buttonhole lever

Bernina 240, won't complete the buttonhole

Double check the instructions and if there is still an issue, call the Bernina dealer and tell them what is wrong.

Ask if someone will be available to look at the machine when you come in .... you need one-on-one assistance.

Hi, its very common for these to need to be recalibrated by a technician.
Possibly its time to have your machine serviced anyway as this is usually when they get recalibrated. I don't think you could be using it incorrectly as there really is just one way.

Machine will not complete a buttonhole, keeps showing error code 6L. No error code listed in manual. Machine will only do first half of buttonhole and then shows code and stops.

I've been looking too and I found here http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/board.pl?t=18328that you need to put the bar behind the needle threader down. I think they call it a button hole stop? I don't know, but it worked. I didn't even know it existed. But it solved my problem. On my Kenmore it looks like a black lever and you pull it down. It tells the button-holer that you are at the end of the hole and it needs to backup. nifty, kind of.

My machine will not sew buttonholes

If your reverse works on other stitches I suspect the buttonhole sensor will have to be tested in the service program. It could be bad. This would have to be done by a tech. You could take a dampend q-tip and try cleaning the lens. It is just above the needle next to the needlbar on the right.
Wish I could help more.

Buttonholing - Bernina 950 (semi-industrial)

This sewing machine looks exactly like the Berninas that I own, although my are not industrial. You just use the dial to make each side of the buttonhole, only having to set the stitch length to super small. The way you make buttonholes is this:

Think of the buttonhole as a square-ish capital O, with the center of the bottom of the O as the point where the button shank will lie when buttoned. Place the marked buttonhole area under the buttonhole foot, with this bottom point directly under the foot, squarely in the center of the 'hole'.
-Turn the dial to 1 and the long left edge will sew in zig zag stitches; stop the machine at the top of the O.
-Then turn the dial to 2 and the top edge of the O will sew; stop the machine after half a dozen stitches.
-Turn the dial to 3 and the right edge will sew; stop the machine at the bottom of the O.
-Turn the dial to 4 and the bottom edge of the O will sew; stop the machine after half a doze stitches.
-Turn the dial to 5 and run half a dozen stitches; this is a line of straight stitches that will 'tie off' the buttonhole.

Try this with a plain piece of fabric. Just put the fabric under the foot and dial away. You'll see how the stitches stitch.

I'll send a copy of instructions from my manual to you if you want. Email me at: pink8006@yahoo.com.

Uneven buttonhole sides

Hi, I'm a Bernina tech and can tell you you need to have a technician recalibrate your buttonhole foot to the machine. There is a function in the service program to do this. Also the machine will need a speed calibration once the buttonhole foot is calibrated. This will definatly solve the problem.

Automatic buttonholer won't work

Your buttonhole foot needs to be recalibrated to your machine by a technician. Takes about 5 minutes or so.
