Be very careful when handling memory. Don't touch the gold contacts. Put the old and new memory beside each other, contacs to contacts, but not touching. Are the notches the same, are there the same number of contacts, is the length the same? When putting memory in, the latches must be all the way open, and the memory perfectly centered and aligned in the slot, no time for poor vision. The notch is not in the middle, the memory only goes one way. Then push the memory down until the latches click in on their own.

You have 4 slots, capable of handling 4GB of memory but CAUTION: most machines come installed with 32 bit Windows OS. To maximize memory you must have 64 bit Windows OS. With 32 bit system, its probable that 1GB will be all your machine will handle.

Memory Upgrade

I believe the max you can go with per slot is 1gb.

This is copied from the Acer site:

Up to 4 GB of DDR2 533/667/800 MHz SDRAM

Adding memory resulted in system failing to boot

Let's get some information about the memory you are using. Get CPU Z and run it with the new memory, then switch back to the old memory and run it again. Write down the results from the memory tab and the SPD tab (all slots being used). You want to make sure that your timings match to give yourself the best chance of success. All of your memory should be DDR2 533 (PC2-4200). SOMETIMES you can use faster memory and it will simply slow down and function. Other times it will not.

How to open desktop to add memory

If you have removed all the screws, it may be that you just need to slide the cover backwards to release the locking flaps. Try pushing the cover in several directions to see if it disengages something.

Installing memory

HI 1008 ,
It is very important to know which branded machine you have ; whether it's Dell , HP etc. I would also require to know the model number and whether you have a Desktop machine or a Notebook.

Anyways , here's a generic guide for your help...

Where can I see a picture of how to add memory to Acer Ast180 desktop?

Assuming it's the correct type of memory, plugging it in is all you should need to do. When you turn it on for the first time the BIOS may detect the extra memory and ask you to accept the changes, but if it does just accept them and it should work fine.
