Is it possible to block msn using a belkin router?

My objective is to limit the time my children have IMing rather than doing homework and study. Unfortunately I fear they would simply disable any local PC blocking I may implement, which is why I want to use the DSL modem/router. I have been able to block all traffic, but would really like to enable browsing while blocking MSN. Leaving port 80 open lets MSN through.

go to the toolbar>tools>internet options and go to the content advisor tab click enable and go through the entire site. you can type in any web site and select never etc and if you go on to advanced you can password your settings.

YOu can also do the samw in your virus control. You can choose certain sites or types of sites that they cannot use. and you can password it. Just don't use a password that they can guess.

I'm sorry I don;t know of anyway to block the router. The First solution above works very well. Just familiarize yourself with the tool and then yo u can go in at will and allow them to go there or not.

    Good luck to you.

Msn connection problem through router

Make sure your internet browser settings are set to default and that you can actually get to other sites besides msn.com before deciding this is a msn web site issue on your firewall. Also, make sure if you have a software firewall like Norton that you allow and have not inadvertantly blocked msn.com. Add msn.com in your browser settings to the 'safe sites' list in browser settings.

Someone is getting into my computer using my wireless system. How can I block my wireless so no one can use my internet? How can I secure it?

they way you do it depends on the wireless access point (router) you have in your home. look for the router manual as you will need this information to get into the specific configuration.

in esence you need to the following:

1. go to your router configuration page. (check your router manual for details on how to this)
2. set an administrator password for your router so only you get access to the configuration page.
3. change the default name for your access point or even better hide it. (set it so it's not broadcasted by the router)
4. setup wireless security (depending on your router your options are wep, wap and wpa2.. set it to wpa2 if possible) this is how your connections its encripted so it's evesdropping becomes difficult or not worthy if someone were to try hard. (now days almost everything is possible with the right tools).
5. make a note of you ssid (name for your access point) and your passphrase.
6. configure your wireless systems to access the access point (router) using the new ssid and the passphrase you configured.

post your name and model of your router and I'll help you getting the manual you need.

Wirless router will not connect with Belkin usb adaptor

There are many possibilities - we'd need many more details.

What operating system (XP, Vista, Mac, Linux)? Can you find the router with the computer? Can you connect to the router at its address (usually 192.168.<something>)? Make and model of the router? Any error messages?

My belkin modem/wireless router model number F5D6833-4 will not always connect to the internet by wireless but operates ok from hard wired lead direct form a port ?

belkins antenna are not very good, put the router on a cupboard where the signal is not blocked surrounding it's area, and remember, doors, walls, floors, windows etc all reduce the signal strength.

If the signal gets below 24 MBPS it may not be able to connect you to the net

Go to the Belkin support section at their website: http://www.belkin.com/support/

Look for your model router and download the "firmware" upgrade for it. Once you go install the up to date firmware try to give the router a reset. Hopefully doing all that will get the router working again and you connecting to the Internet.

Do you have a wireless security protocol enabled, and if so, what? Install a wired connection to the router (use an ehternet cable to connect your laptop's RJ-45--looks like a wide phone plug--into one of the Belkin router's network jacks). Go to the router's management page using your web browser (probably http://192.168.2.1). If you have not previously set the password in your router, simply leave the password field blank and CLICK "Submit". If you have previously password protected your Belkin router, use the known password. If you have forgotten your password... you'll need to reset your router.

Reest Router: there is usually a small hole into whiuch a pin or paper clip can be inserted for this purpose or a small button to press. Most Belkins--IIRC--have the button.

Once you are on the Belkin router's management page, look for the wireless link and set your security protocol to match what your wireless card is capable of, set the password, save and exit. Use the sasme password in configuring wireless networking in Windows.

When using the Belkin G router the network connection becomes lost and can not get on the internet. My computer has Vista on it and Belkin says that the router is compatible with the program.

This is possibly caused by your firewall or the wireless security (wpa/wep) on the router if you have set it up.
First of all, if you can connect to the internet via a cabled connection the problem is going to be with the way you've set the router up.
If you've setup wireless security on the router, have you also set it up for your wireless adaptor?.
I suggest you try to connect to the internet via cable to start with, if this works try to connect wirelessly with your firewall off.
If all else fails start from the beginning again.
