I want to delete everything and start over!

I hav an old laptop the only offical cd and manual i have is windows NT. When i start up the laptop i hav to choose xp pro, rather than the xp pro setup,, i must hav done something wrong when i tried to install sp2 from a disk.
I want to delete all these partitions and things and get instructions to reformat.thinks this is what i want to do,been reading over these pages for hours but not to sure.
Ideally il get NT working fast and get windows/microsoft updates to get offical xp.

You'll need to go to SAFE mode, or boot from the install disk, which ever is most accessible.

Cannot bypass password for laptop

If you're using Windows XP, there is a separate hidden account called administrator. The easiest way to access it is to go into safe mode.

You do this by tapping F8 just after the self test, and before windows starts to load.

Once on the start up menu choose safe mode. Click on the administrator account.

From there you can change any passwords in the control panel under user accounts.

You do not have to know any of the passwords to change them.

Or you can use utility to delete the lost password.

Usually it need 3 steps:

1.Download Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0 from http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com and decompress it on that PC.there is a .ISO file. Burn the .ISO file to a CD.

2.Get out the newly created CD and insert it to the locked computer.

3.Re-boot the locked computer and then follow the process of instructions. Just after a few steps, the old password will be removed.

It supports all Windows version, recover Windows 7 password,Vista/XP/2003/2000/NT etc.

My ms office got deleted wen my laptop got crashed can i download ms office 4 free as of now i don hav de ms cd now..

Did the MS Office (full version) come pre-installed on your computer when you purchased the computer ?
If yes, then you had paid for it, when you paid for the computer, so contact the manufacturer of your computer for it's product key, after which download the trial version of it and use your product key to get it activated.
If did was not pre-installed on your computer and you had it installed after you bought the computer, using it's disc and you have lost the disc (and product key), then the only option is to buy it again, either a disc version or a downloadable version.

Error in ms office

Rename and Reinstall the Vbe6.dll File

NOTE: You need your Office CD-ROM to complete this task.
  1. Quit all currently open programs.
  2. Start an MS-DOS prompt in a window by doing one of the following:
    • Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98: Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.
    • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me): Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.
    • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0: Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Command Prompt.
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP: Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
  3. To change the directory to the location of the Vbe6.dll file, type one of the following (including the quotation marks), and then press ENTER: CD "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Vba\Vba6"-or- CD progra~1\Common~1\Micros~1\Vba\Vba6NOTE: This is the default directory for the Vbe6.dll file. If you installed Microsoft Office into another drive or directory, you must type its path.
  4. To unregister the Vbe6.dll file, type the following.

In Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me, type: C:\Windows\System\REGSVR32 /U VBE6.DLLIn Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, type: REGSVR32 /U VBE6.DLL-or- C:\Winnt\System32\REGSVR32 /U VBE6.DLLNOTE: This is the default directory for the Windows System directory. If you installed Windows into another directory, you must type its path.
  5. In the MS-DOS prompt window, rename Vbe.dll to Vbe.old by typing the following and then pressing ENTER: rename vbe6.dll vbe6.old
  6. Quit the MS-DOS prompt window. To do this, do one of the following:
    • Type Exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. -or-

    • Click Close (the X in the upper-right corner of the window).
  7. Start Microsoft Word.
  8. On the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Macros.

The Windows Installer detects that the Vbe6.dll file is missing on the system, installs the file from the Office CD, and registers it again.

I recently had a HD crash and have replaced it with another HD using the same Windows XP OS. While trying to reload programs that were on the old HD to the replacement, some of the programs get this error...

I always receive a "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT" error message.

“C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-
DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.”

This error message is not caused by the installation CD-ROM, but rather by the
“Autoexec.nt” system file. Windows is unable to find this file when launching the
installation CD-ROM, the file most likely having been deleted by another application.

To resolve this problem, proceed as follows:
1. Go to “C:\Windows\repair” and find the file “Autoexec.nt”.
2.Copy this file to “C:\Windows\system32”.
3.Right-click the file “Autoexec.nt” that you have just copied, and select
“Properties”.
4.Tick the “Read-only” box and then click “OK”.

Good luck!

Need Instructions on this...

In order to upgrade to XP with a fresh install, you will need to purchase an XP disc, then it's simple. Upon start up you need to go to the boot menu or set the cd drive to boot before the hard drive in the bios. Then insert the disc and follow the directions. At one point, you will need to delete the existing operating system in order to install the new. Once this is done, then you will need to format the drive using the full NTFS format, not the quick format. Then it's all down hill, just follow the direction. After the install, you will need to go to Compaq's support site and download any drivers needed. You can find the needed drivers in the device manager. I realize you would like to get around the XP purchase, but unfortunately, there's no way around it.

How to perform a clean install on the old laptop

Rather then loading NT, I would just load XP.
Xp actually is, NT 5.+

It will run on that laptop with out any problems.
I would suggest, however, that you have at least 512MB of RAM (more is better)
When you boot to the XP disk, you will have options on what to do.
One of the options is to delete the existing partition. If you have removed any data you want to save, delete the partition, and then continue with creating a partition, formatting, and loading (they pretty much walk you through the steps on the install).

Note to the above....when you delete the existing partition, any data that is on the computer is gone. So make sure that you have looked it over before doing that.

You will also need to make note of onboard devices beforehand so that you do know your onboard devices (sound, video, NIC etc) and you can make sure to have those drivers inhand before you start. XP has a number of them built in, but some, you will have to go to the HP/Compaq site to download.

If you need any additional information, you can find me here..

Hey im Sarah, So iv got old my old laptop. Its a Compaq Armada M700, it did run on Windows 2000 but my uncle put XP Professional Build 2600 on it. it works but i cant get the latest msn internet explorer...

A clean install would probably be the best thing to do.
Over time, all computers pick up bits and pieces of programs of patchs, and programs no longer used.
So with a clean fresh install, it will not have to deal with any of the "leftovers"

This is my personal choice any time I want to get the best performance out of an older machine, format and load.
