Compaq Armada 7380 5X86 Processor Board

AMD 5x86 for Compaq Deskpro/33M

By herself - usenet poster

I got a great deal on an AMD 5x86 133mhz cpu ($45) and apparently go my
money's worth.  It doesn't work in my Compaq Deskpro/33m - vintage 1991.
I called AMD and they were hepful and told me that it was because the
mother board was operating at 5v and the AMD processor needed 3.5v.  They
said I just needed to modify the jumpers on the mother board and it would
work.  Not knowing even where to begin, I called Comapq.  Duh!! No help
whatsoever.  They couldn't even find a diagram that had the jumper specs
on it.
Can anyone give me some advice.  (I know buy low - sell high!)  Thanks.

Doug

If it is vintage 1991, I doubt that it does 3.5 volts.  You may want
to try Digi-Key.  They have the required voltage regulator for the
enhanced AMD 486 and 5x86 chips.  It is part number 97-486DX2UC.
You simply plug your 5x86 into the regulator socket, and plug the
regulator into the CPU socket in the mother board.  It basically sits
between your motherboard and CPU to do the required voltage regulation.
It runs $39.00, and has a jumper to select writeback cache on the CPU.
Digi-Key is at www.digikey.com or 1-800-344-4539.  If you have their
volumous catalog, it's on page 96, top left corner (Jan-Feb 97, cat
number 971).

I have Deskpro/33m and am using Am5x86-133MHz CPU, too. There are no
jumpers to reduce 5v to 3.3v on Mobo. Use regulater socket to reduce
voltage.

Doug,

The DeskPro/33m is old enough that it is a 5-volt only motherboard.
There are no jumpers to set it up to use the 3.45v AMD CPU.  I have
not worked with that model of DeskPro, but I have tested the
DeskPro/33i with an AMD processor and a voltage regulator.  The good
news is that it runs.  The bad news is that the motherboard is old
enough that it's signals to the CPU prevent it from running at its
full 133MHz.  100MHz is the max, but a lot better than the current
33MHz... Ben Myers
