I am trying to scan a document for the first time since i got my HP 4550 and of course can't find my manual anywhere. how do i tell it to scan to my computer, which is wireless and already connected to the HP.

Try using the HP Scan Diagnostic Utility in Windows - HP Customer Care (United States - English).

From 'File' select 'Create PDF', 'from Scanner'.
Scan the first page and the program will ask of you for 'Next' or 'Done'.
Select 'Next' until you have scanned the last page, then select 'Done'.
You can also make the document searchable by carrying out an OCR on it under 'Documents', 'Recognise text under OCR', 'Start'.

First you need to make sure the driver for the scanner is installed by going into the device manager and seeing if it has a question mark next to it. If there is you need drivers. Also look under scanners and cameras in the control panel and see if it's showing up there. What operating system are you running? You may have to go to HP's web site to download the correct drivers for your OS.

uninstall the printer, reinstall it, and if the option to scan to pdf hasn't returned consult the manual.

You can download the entire set of documentation for your HP Lasergjet 4550 from the HP site, including the owners manual, and a service manual.

just go to : www.HP.com

type in the model number under the support link, and you can get everything you need.

Go to hp.com. Support and drivers/enter your printer/check your operating system/find the correct drivers that allow scanning. Download and install them

The scan button is setup to push the scan to an application, if you uninstalled the HP scanning software, it isn't going to go anywhere. If you didn't, it will put it into your documents folder under "My Pictures" in an HP created folder.

That said, you can also go into any application, like Word. then click "Insert > Picture > From Scanner or Camera" and carry the image in directly.

ok...window vista as long as i am remeber got window photo gallery inside....you can scan you document use this window photo gallery.....or other choice you can use software utilities from HP.(the software came together with printer) if still cannot...you can download latest HP F380 printer driver from hp website......

could be the software together with printer just only for win XP...

The 4550 will not allow multi page scanning into a single doc using the provided software. You should try another scan software that is TWAIN or WIA compatible. Those should work okay if you are using a USB connection.
