Question about Freezers
I just learned about your website----I don't know if you can help me, but it's worth a try. We went on vacation for 2 weeks and inadvertently turned off the upright freezer. When we returned we were met with the most foul odor you can even imagine. We have cleaned up the mess----put "odor-rid" on the concrete after we tore out and discarded the carpet (the "juices" leaked out and into the carpet beneath the freezer. We are still having odor issues with the freezer. We think we need to replace the seal---that's $60---we don't want to do that if the freezer cannot be saved. Are we barking up the wrong tree---is it possible to save the freezer (it's only 2 years old)? We took out all the baskets and shelving materials---we washed them and the walls and outside of the freezer with soda in water. We've washed everything at least twice. The baskets and "things" still have an odor about them---some of the shelfing is plastic and I'm assuming it has absorbed the smell. If we take it outside and open it up to air out, will that be good enough? We could really use any advice you can give us. Thank you so much----I'm simmering cinnamon sticks and whole cloves all day long, but the smell is still there----I'm guessing that will just take time---like when you burn popcorn in the micro-wave. Thanks. Linda D.
Try putting a tray of crushed charcoal in there... a one foot by one foot tray about 3 inches deep filled with crushed BBQ briquettes (the kind that doesn't have lighter fluid in it!) left over night or longer may pull much of the "stank" out, and you can always do it again with fresh charcoal if it works but not well enough... Good luck!
