The BD-P1000 Blu-ray disc (BD) player includes a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) output, an industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface on a single cable, allowing users to easily connect the Blu-ray player to their existing home televisions.

Hi baucoml, about the sound not going right in your system and having a Terk switch, you may have to check if the cables are conencted to the ports where they should be, it will also depend on what switch you have to get the 6.1 sorround work. like the digram below, you will see the way it is connected which will run somewhat like yours. there are other switches that only supports L and R stereo and not HD audio

Just hooked up new samsung bd p1600 remote and play will not work

Your not alone. I went into the menu system manually to setup clock and language and other options. I had to download and install the upgraded firmware available from the website, and then to disable the anytime+ samsung feature...then suddenly after hours, and after the samsung help line told me to return the unit, it worked.
good luck

Cant figure out to hook up keeps saying no signal with hdmi cable to tv and blu ray put in

What kind of TV are you hooking the dvd player up to ? You may have to go into the TVs menu and set the input to the proper resolution or input style to see a picture. The dvd outputs a 1080i and if the TV is set to 720p it may not show a picture, the dvd output can also be changed to match the TV.
