This is a comin in all front loaders. It it caused by two things not using HE soap and keeping the door closed when not using it. The only way to get rid of the smell is to run 3 to 5 cycles with bleach and no clothes or use a washer cleaner. Most large hardware stores carry them. Once the smell is gone be sure to leave the door open when you are not using it and wipe out the gray boot(gasket/seal) after using.

Washed clothes still smell dirty

If you don't leave the door open after each use you will get a musty smell and mold will build up in the bellows. also you need to wipe the bellows dry and the door glass dry as to not get a build up of soap residue on it which will eventually make the door leak. Also, only use one or two tablespoons of soap, not what the soap manufacturer says on the package.

Smell after drying

Try drying your clothes without the dryer sheet and see if the smell is still there. If it is not, then the problem is the dryer sheet.
If it is, then you need to describe the smell better. Different people handle smells differently. What smells musty to you may smell fragrant to others.
You need to determine if the smell you don't like is really a musty smell, or is it a fragrance you don't like. Have some friends (not family members) smell the clothes and verify if what you are smelling is musty or fragrant.

It could also be that even though the clothes smell OK out of the washer, that the detergent you are using is the cause.

Smelly clothes after washing

yes musty is actually cooked soap
from the dryer
take a clean just washed towel and put it in the washer alone with no soap
turn on the machine and watch what happens you will see the suds start to form
with this unit, if your using too much soap it will be spun into the cloths and then cooked in the dryer
do one towel load without soap then cut you soap usage way back
anything more than a tablespoon is way to much

remember you bought this unit to save water

1/6 the water 1/6 the soap
and he should be less

I noticed that my clothes are not smelling fresh, especially my towels. The washer has a musty smell even after running it with bleach. When I shake the washer when it is empty I can hear water. Is this...

if it is a Maytag neptune YES that sound is normal. especially when you rotate the drum by hand that is your balance ring you are hearing. Do you only use liquid detergent? if yes this might be your problem. it leaves a film around the drum. i would run 3 wash cycles with bleach and hot water. and then at least once a month with hot water and bleach to keep it fresh and also leave the door open so that it can air dry oder causeing bacteria love moisture.

Our towels and clothes have a mildew/musty smell. when I spin the stainless drum inside, i can hear water sloshing around.

Towel mildew odor is transferred from the washer to towels and clothes. The washer must be cleaned first. After cleaning the washer and towels washing habits must change to stop mold smell from returning.

Washing machine mold / mildew is caused by:
#1 cause is overuse of detergents. Detergent companies are notorious for instructing to use too much detergent. Especially with soft water or when using liquid detergent no more than 1 tbsp of any detergent should be used.
#2 most common cause is using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle and will coat the inside of the outer tub with residue that is a food source for mold to grow.
#3 using only cold water for washing is fine but makes preventative maintenance very important. A weekly hot soak will dissolve odor-causing residue from inside your washer.
#4 not using the washer. If the clothes washer isn't used very often maintenance is especially important. If leaving for a vacation it's a good idea to clean your washer. Do a search to "remove washer odor" to read just how big the problem is. There are all natural washer cleaners that will also remove mildew odor from towels and clothing after the washer has been cleaned.

Water seems to be left in bottom of washer

This is a Maytagism for this style of washer.
Quick solution... take a terry towel and wipe out the standing water in the front door seal area and when you're done, toss the towel into the wash load.
Also make the loads a little smaller...it will keep the smell from reoccuring as much.

Clothes have a musty smell if left in the washer

Make shure to do a cleaning cycle. As well, wipe out the inside, the rubber gasket and the door when done washing for the day. We also have found that
leaving the door "Open" for several hours, when finnished, eliminates any future
smells.
