I turn my playstation on and the background is on and active but the menu options do not show up. How can I fix this

hello try resetting it, turn on the ps3 press and hold standby button on the front you will 1 bleep then 2 short bleeps after the 2 short bleeps release the button it should reset

This problem is because your PS3 software has become corrupt. The following steps will cure the problem but you will lose saved games and all other data. Your trophies will not be affected as these are stored by the Playstation Network.
Step 1. Turn your PS3 onto standby (Red light on)
Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it, beep 5 seconds later then beep once more 5 seconds later and then turn back to standby. Release the power button.
Step 3. Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then beep twice quickly. Let go of the power button as soon as you hear these two beeps.
Step 4. The PS3 will start up asking you to plug in a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Do this and it will boot into the recovery menu.
Step 5. Choose option 5 (Restore PS3 system). This will re-install the PS3 software and restart the console.
Step 6. When the PS3 restarts you will be asked to enter the time and date and other information. When the setup is complete your PS3 will boot into the home menu normally.

If the PS3 is not loadingg the main menu this is a sign that yoou have corrupted data on your hard drive. The link below will help you address this. If you still have trouble then you have a serious hardware problem.

This is most likely the system has been overridden, or corrupted. You may need to replace the hard drive :)

i had this same problem a few weeks earlier. It might tell you something like you might lose your memory, just restart the system and it should be working fine. If it keeps doing the same thing as in not showing the menu then either you need to get your ps3 checked out or it has crashed

Yea, i've called sony quite a few times myself and got no help.

You can use the 'new' feature they added. Turn on your PS3 and hold the power button till you hear two beeps, then release. Its a recovery menu you can use to try and fix it. If that doesnt work you may have to send it in for repairs, The menu only works on firmware 2.50 and up.

i dont really understand what the deal is, but try resetting the console to factory settings. go to settings, system settings, restore to factory...
