A window similar to this one will open and you will see your CD/DVD drive.

If double clicking the drive does not open the CD, right-click the symbol with your mouse and choose "Play" or "Open".

It has win.2000 on it but wont boot up. it gets to config 32 and says its corrupt or missing. i just got it like this and have tried everything in the f8 menu, i have a xp original disk actually several...

You might have multiple problems. Are you sure the CD-Rom works? It is not uncommon for CD-ROM drives to go bad in laptops. If it was bad before and then the hard drive became corrupt all before it was given to you then you would have no way of knowing. This would explain why you do not get the Press Any Key to Boot From CD on boot.

There is no doubt that the hard drive image is corrupt, so the first thing I would check is the CD drive and go from there.

DVD R/RW Wont dont anything

From the device manager, Right click on the drive and uninstall it. Then restart your computer. See if that helps.

If still not, then you can try this step.

1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
BFC1-08002BE10318}

4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters
* UpperFilters.bak
* LowerFilters.bak

5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
7) Reboot your computer

CD Rom Drive

Eveidently you disabled the CD from within control panel. I'm assuming you are familiar with windows, so I'm just going to give the buttons you press. Do the following:

Start(bottom left of screen)>Setting>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>DVD/CD Rom Drives +>Click on your CD and select use this device (enable) down in the bottom of the box.

Press OK and close all the boxes and see if the device appears in your safely remove hardware dialogue.

If not, go to HP.com, select downloads and find the driver for your CD and reinstal.

This should clear it up.

Good luck!!
