This is an intentional thing that IBM has done. I am working on a T41 laptop, and yesterday I was stressing out over an R40 laptop. Both of them are screwed up ON PURPOSE by IBM.

I am looking for a way around this. I read about Drive Overlay Software, but what/where is that? Gimme!!

After fdisk and format you need to ensure that operative system is installed into yor hard drive. Using ghost you restore the image disk by booting from ghost image CD if you made a bootable image disk. Ensure Bios is set up to boot from CD.
If you used Norton Ghost ensure you captured the image of full bootable original hard disk drive for same computer. If it does not boot after restoring ghosted image, than the image it is probably not complete. If hard disk image is not good, easiest thing to do is using Windows install CD to installl again operative system, then you eventually restore ghost image.

I can not detach my IBM Think pad 2662 lap top from the driver

I had the same issue. Here's what I did. Not sure if it will work for you. But give it a try.
1) turn on the machine and press "F2" to go into set up.
2) Press alt-p seven times to go to the last page.
3)Press the down arrow to highlight HDD password. Set a password as instructed and reboot the machine.
4) You can remove this password later once your machine starts fine.

Even if you didn't get try this too.

1. Make bootable CD which contains Norton Ghost or other disk image software
2. Boot your system using bootable CD with Norton Ghost software, u can use Hiren's CD ISO image. If u don't know about hiren just google it.

2. Once you boot up , open Norton Ghost click LOCAL-> PARTITION->FROM IMAGE

3. Now "look in" for "[DellRestore]FAT drive" and select this drive (this is recovery partition)

4. Now go to "IMG" folder and select FI.GHO file

5. Click Open and there you go... Process started

Power problem

If you have already tested and changed the RAM then from your description and the things you have done, it looks like you have a faulty motherboard.
This computer is too old to consider replacing the motherboard, if you could get one. If it was me I would put my money towards a new one.
You could use the hard drive, put it into and USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

How to fix Error 0189

This worked for me on a R40 with the 0189 issue.

When the message pops up, hit escape to continue.

1. Download the IBM Hardware Maintenance Disk and create a floppy. The filename for version 1.75 is i7tm23us.exe. I found it at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/i7tm23us.exe

2. If you do not have a floppy drive on your laptop, then use nero to create a bootable CD from the files and boot sector of the floppy disk.

3. Boot your laptop from the CD, then choose the Assign UUID option.

This should do the trick for you.

Display 2010 error message

POST warning message 2010 after BIOS upgrade or hard drive installation - ThinkPad General
dblue_rule.gif c.gif d_bold.gif Applicable countries and regions c.gif dotted_rule_443.gif c.gif Symptom After a BIOS upgrade or installation of a new hard drive, the following error message may appear at POST: ERROR
2010:Warning: Your internal hard disk drive (HDD) may not function correctlyon this system. Ensure that your HDD is supported on this system andthat the latest HDD firmware is installed. Press <Esc> to continue

Press <F1> to Setup
The system appears to boot normally after escape is pressed and the operating system will load.

Affected configurations This message may occur on any system that uses the Intel 915 Expresschip set. This new chipset uses a different hard drive interfacetechnology (Serial ATA) to address the hard drive. Models specifically included are of the following systems:
  • ThinkPad R52 systems
    Machine types:
    • 1846, 1847, 1848, 1849, 1850, 1858, 1859, 1860, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1870

  • ThinkPad T43 systems
    Machine types:
    • 1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876, 2668, 2669, 2678, 2679, 2686, 2687

  • ThinkPad X41 systems
    Machine types:
    • 1864, 1865, 2525, 2526, 2527, 2528

  • ThinkPad X41 Tablet systems
    Machine types:
    • 1866, 1867, 1869
Solution There are three possible workarounds to eliminate the error:
  1. Update the hard drive firmware to the latest level. Download the hard drive firmware update, and then apply to your hard drive.
Note: This update requires a floppy disk drive.
  2. Replace the hard drive with one supported by the system being used.
  3. Usethe hard drive, producing the 2010, error in the Ultrabay of the systemor a docking station with the second hard drive adapter instead. Theinterface to the Ultrabay is parallel ATA. For more information visit, ThinkPad Second Hard Drive Adapter for Ultrabay Slim - Overview
Additional information This error is purposely generated to alert the user to potentialproblems with diagnostic or copy tools. There are known issues withseveral of these listed below.
  1. Disk Fitness Test (DFT) version 3.xx provided byHitachi GST which uses vendor specific commands on the hard drive. These may not be correctly interpreted since they must pass through theserial to parallel ATA bridge. However, version 4.00 or later of theDisk Fitness Test (DFT) will work.
  2. HDDTEST version 0.28 by Hitachi GST does not function properly for similar reasons. Instead, use HDDTEST version 0.29 or later.
  3. DOS-basedcopy tools may function slowly or produce incorrect output, specifically previous versions of Norton/Symantec Ghost. These versionsare not compatible with the Serial-ATA interface of the Intel ICH6Mchip set. Documentation on this problem may be found atwww.symantec.com. It is recommended to use either a newer version ofGhost, Norton Ghost 2003 (version 2003.789 or later) or Symantec Ghost8.0 or later, or to use the -FNI switch when invoking Ghost from thecommand prompt (For example, Ghost.exe -FNI with the current version of Ghost).
Other disk copy tools and related applications, such as some backup programs, may also have similar behavior. Thehard drives shipped in the affected systems will not display themessage because they already have firmware that recognizes this newSerial ATA bridge chip. However, a similar drive from an earlierThinkPad system or an OEM drive might cause the error message to bedisplayed. Customers may also notice the POST error message afterapplying a ThinkPad BIOS update if a drive without the firmware updateis installed in the system. Some early systems were shipped with asystem BIOS version that did not provide this POST error message.Updated BIOS has been released to provide this informative POST errormessage to users.

How to get into the Dos prompt at reboot for the IBM ThinkPad 2645?

Vince,
First of all, What operating system do you have on this machine?
If it's Win98, you can get DOS.
If it's WinXP, you will have to make a bootable CD to get into the DOS prompt.
Check out this link :
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

You can also get into the setup from CD, by changing the boot sequence from BIOS. (If the installation CD that you have is a bootable CD)

Hope this helps.

Thanks & Good luck!
