i am having the same problem too. Bought my WD 320GB HD in Dec 08. Used for 1 month and everything are fine. Recently when i plug in the Hard Disk, the computer show detected external disk and also report ready to use. But when i go into the explorer, i just cannot find the driver. I also tried to plug in my other hard disk and they work prefectly alright and they appear in ym explorer but only not the WD HD. Tried to go to the device manager and under the hardware, the WD appear in the list and it show working properly. Tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall it but also still the same problem. Anyone can help me please?????

You may need to plug in an additional cable for power for the hard drive. If you have, make sure the hard drive itself is not broken

I plug it to my computer and I get a message saying that USB Device Not Recognized. I Have plugged and unplugged about 50 times and I still can't get it to work.

Try installing a driver disc for it first or locate the driver for it. Then plug it in, or turn off your computer unplug the USB device then with computer unplugged from the wall hit the power button till it flashes or about 3-5 seconds is all then leave the USB device unplugged and restart the computer again get it up and settled down. Then put the USB in another USB port. Try this thanks for using FixYa John

Hi there.

I have this same HDD and I don't think your problem is related with any "installation" or softwares. It should work just as a plug-n-play hardware, as mine does. Maybe Ooq Affiat's advice would do, by changing the USB cable. Best luck!

Although this may seem tedious and unnecessary, it can save time and headaches in the long run.
2 Back up the computer's hard drive just to be safe. This will allow for a speedy recovery should the installation mess up the computer.
· 4 Install the webcam software. Before deciding to install the disc that came with the camera, check the Internet for an updated version of the software and download that if available.
· 5 Plug in the webcam. The software should give a prompt at the appropriate time. Cameras are usually installed with a USB cable. If installed correctly, the computer will acknowledge so by popping up a message saying it can see the new device.
· 6 Download an instant message program if using the web camera for chatting. Some free IM download programs include Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and Apple iChat.

Do I need a disc to install

This is a external hard drive and no need for you to install any software to a computer in order for it to work , this is a plug and play device you just need to wait for the computer to recognize it after you plug it to a USB port and once its recognize its ready to use.

My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

    Software Installation Problem

I had this problem just a few minutes ago. The way to get through this is to plug in the USB cable *before* you begin the installation. When Windows detects a device and ask for drivers you need to click cancel for each device (printer, fax, scanner, etc) that it prompts for.

Run the installation disc or file as normal with the USB cable plugged in and it should work. It worked for me.
