Question about Mitsubishi WS-55857 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

No Video or Sound

I have had this TV for seven years and it's worked fine until this weekend.  It started dropping out video segments of as TV show last night.  This morning it won't show anything (just blue screen).  I wired the satellite feed directly from the sat receiver box to the TV -- but nothing just blue screen. When I tried to access the TV's onscreen Menu (pressing the Menu button on the TV remote), the screen went all black -- when I hit that button again, it returned to a blue screen.  I toggle through all the input channels on the TV -- nothing changed but the channel ID in the upper left corner.  I can hear sound through my surround sound system -- so I know the sat receiver is working OK.
I think the TV chipset is dead -- Is this worth fixing, or should I just buy a new TV?

Based on what you described I would say your TV has the "shrinking and expanding" fault. Its a common problem on that model and the symptoms can range from the video shrinking and expanding or no video or no audio....You can read more about this fix on the site www.TvRepairKits.com

Ghosting and bad color, sound is fine.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Cant get our HDMI to work on our JVC HD 58S998.

First, contrary to popular opinion, HDMI cables connect to a tv are not the best way to connect the two. The HDMI technology has flaws that often shows up as sound problems.

If your TV has the capability for component connections, use them. It will take 5 cables, 3 for video and 2 for audio. You will get superior sound and video. The 5 cables terminate in RCA type connectors and are much cheaper than an HDMI cable.

I hope this helps and solves your problem. :-)

I had this problem happen to me today. What i did was unplug the tv for an hour and when i plugged it back in, the first time setup appeared on the tv. The remote and the tv buttons worked fine after that. Hopefully that works for you too.

Component Video inputs do not work

I started back in the day of tubes. A family would have one set and it would be a 19" black and white. There are different resolutions now. The components probably do work, but, they don't pass the 480i signal. The satelite converter's analog signal needs to be set to 480p and the DVD needs to be set to progressive if it does have that setting. If the DVD is not a progressive scan DVD, then, the only inputs that it will show on is the analog signal. Some of the dish converters have a switch on the face for changing the resolution. If yours doesn't then put it in an analog source and go to the menu and change it there. Then move it to the component input. Hope this helps.
