Most often HP total care not functioning is caused by turning off UAC, presuming that you are using Windows Vista. If you are on Vista, UAC must be enabled, and your account must have a high enough security level, to use the HP Total Care solution.
If this information assists you in resolving the problem, please take a moment to rate the solution at a "FixYa" level. If you do not feel that you can rate at a "FixYa", please post back with more information regarding what has occurred subsequently and/or more details regarding the situation, and I will gladly help you until we have reached a definitive solution. Sorry - I just got the email that you sent a message. With User Account Control (UAC) on, are you an administrator, and have you restarted the machine? Also, can you tell me what model machine you are on?
Also, can you give me the exact message you get from Windows? The reason for all these questions is that HP has had several issues with Total Care, and I have installed numerous updates. Which ones depend on your model, and the exact issues...
I might also offer the telephone number direct to HP, as they offer 24/7 support by phone for every PC. They also have access to all of the upgrades, etc., and if something doesn't go quite right, they should be able to find a workaround.
If you are in the US, it would be (800) HP invent == (800) 474-6836 for most HP & Compaq products.
The details re additional numbers are located here:

Thanks for the information. The problem with waiting for Windows to find a solution and contact you is that, generally, you could literally wait your entire life and if they ever did get back to you, it would likely be to say that the issue lies with HP. This is speaking from personal experience, where I spent more than an entire month and a half working with individuals who were designated as their top "development" team, and they never found a solution for the situation on my Compaq (which was absolutely & definitely caused by install of Win XP SP2). They closed the support incident as "unresolved." So, in case you aren't tired of reading some potentially helpful hints, just another couple of "tidbits" for you to consider.
Have you installed SP1, or did your PC come this way, and has TCA ever worked? Interestingly, on your model, HP references SP1 on a Microsoft web page for "software that stops functioning after installing SP1." Of course, they do not mention TCA specifically...
Did you uninstall the "Connections" piece? (Ref: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...).
My own personal opinion (for whatever that's worth?) is that the tools which some may find helpful within the Total Care Advisor are available as standalone downloads (from HP or otherwise, often already available in Help or within Windows), and you might be able to use the features you want that way. Others within the TCA are simply bloatware (e.g., how often do you need to set up a new ISP?) While it is visually appealing (when it works), this too consumes system resources, and most of the information is readily available withiin Windows - battery charge, security alerts, etc.
Many people feel that the TCA is not worth the memory or overall system impact of running the full package constantly, and it is constantly a source of problems. The references are many, for example: http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/foru... --- another one (there are countless): http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspn...
Finally, if your machine is new, and if this is important to you, I would suggest pursuing it through a manager level, and all the way to having a "Case Manager" assigned to get the machine replaced, if necessary. We all have different priorities, and you did pay for the package - it should work! Best of luck, and don't hesitate to post back if you need further assistance. I have dealt with the highest level of support resolution at both MS & HP, and have had a very difficult time obtaining satisfactory resolution of issues, especially major items....
