You could purchase another identical external disk-drive, and "transplant" your "old" disk-drive into the new case, to see if you can read from the "old" disk while inside the "new" casing.
If not, then re-insert the "new" disk-drive into the "new" casing, and use the "new" external disk-drive as a 'BACKUP' for your files (not to hold the ONLY copy of your files).

Take a close look -- the USB adapter can be *DETACHED* from the hard-drive.
It simply is not ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE to make a different hard-drive that can *ONLY* be used inside an external casing. So, any external storage device uses IDENTICAL disk-drive hardware as "normally" used inside desktop/laptop computers.
i can send u a picture of the hard drive to take a look at it =)
Post a picture to your Twitter account, and tell me your Twitter ID, and make your Twitter messages "public", so that I can retrieve the picture. I'll bet that there is a DETACHABLE adapter that connects to a "standard" disk-drive. Put a $0.25 piece into the picture, as a "reference" object of a known size.
