Problem for Dell Latitude CP 56K PCMCIA Modem Card (PC Card) - 96964

HELP: Linksys 10/100+56K + DELL Latitude CPT + Windows NT.

" "
Last weekend, I tried to make Linksys EtherFast 10/100+56K Modem PC
card
work on my DELL Latitude CPT under Windows NT 4.0  but all of my efforts
failed.

The PC card is installed as COM2 (default Base I/O port address and
default IRQ), the
PC card could not be detected under Windows NT, so the modem driver is
installed manually.

The dial-up networking show the error message of "
Error 692: Hardware failure in port or attached device."

Both the PC card and Laptop are brand new, I am not sure this is the
hardware problem.

Thanks.

Steve - I have the same problem. New CPt 400, New Linksys PCMLM56. I
called both linksys and dell.  While both parties were polite and
willing to help, neither was aware of this problem.  The linksys tech
tells me that he personally had this card working on a CPt 333.  In
any event, I suspect that the problem is between the Dell Softex PC
Card driver and the Linksys card.  Here is what I discovered:

Dell low-level (DOS) dianostic diskettes, when run, recognize the
Linksys card in the pc slot. (That is, it knows that a card of some
kind is present.)

Softex NT drivers don't even recognize that a card is present. Both
slots show as being empty.  When I put the card in there is a
momentary bit of 100% cpu activity, then nothing. Same thing ("empty
slot") regardless of whether I hot swap or put the card in and then
turn on the machine.

A friend's older Thinkpad *did* recognize the Linksys card... and the
"card inserted" dialog popped up when the machine was turned on with
the Linksys card inserted.  Therefore I think the card is okay, so to
speak.

My CPt 400 *did* recognize a 3com modem as well as a 3com 16-bit Fast
EtherLink card (3C574-TX). The 3Com Fast Ethernet card seems to work
just fine. So, the CPt is also okay... so to speak.
