I haae the same problem with the black box. This didn't start until I connected my cable (digital) box. I bought the tv a long time age used and I don't have a remote for the tv. How can I fix this without a remote? Thanks

I've had Direct TV with the same satellite box and TV for years, and in the last few weeks a black box coverting about half the screen in the lower center has shown up only on certain channels.

I have the same problem and it occurs on Channel 7 and Channel 5 whether or not I am watching with the converter box on or not. I don't think there are any Parental Controls in place. We certainly didn't set any.

I get this box on two local channels, one PBS, the other a local ABC channel. It's not always there. Right now I'm watching Washington Week in Review, certainly not something a Vchip would black out.

Check to see that you don't have any channel locks or parental parental permission measures deployed. If so remove them, this includes V-Chip, and Parental lock out on the remote, and check your TVs menu items. What channel are being affected by this problem? Give channel number and channel type.

Thank you,

Check in main menu (set and box if using one) under closed captions--one of the settings is TEXT--black box will appear in middle of screen and certain channels--with the remote turn text off.

On my TV certain shows (Craig Furgerson, Oprah, The View)on different networks,a black rectangle, about 1/3 of the picture, appears. I cannot remove it.

That box appears to be from the close caption feautre. If you have the original remote you can disable using the menu and go to audio functions and look for close caption to turn it OFF.
Do you have the user's guide for this TV?
If you do not, could you provide the model number of your TV?

I have an ultravision That has a problem sense it was new, and getting worse. When on chanel 4 or 401, sometimes other chanels, bun not often the center of the screen goes Black in aprox the seme area...

Check both the set and the box if you are using one, you are describing a TEXT feature which on certain channels puts a black box in the middle of the screen----idea was to send text but it never to my knowledge was used.

The feature can be either in the set itself or a box (cable/sat etc) and will be found in the settings under CLOSED CAPTIONS, MAKE SURE IT IS OFF IN THE SET FIRST AND IF STILL A PROBLEM CHECK THE BOX FOR CABLE ETC AS IT CAN ALSO BE THERE.

Once you find closed captions, make sure TEXT is not highlighted.

Let me know if you have questions.

Black box blocks on certain programs

Check your closed-caption settings. You should find it's set for "text" right now. Turn it to "off" (or to "caption 1" if you want the captioning).

In text mode, the TV blanks out a portion of the screen to put up text that never shows up. You only notice on channels or programs where captioned programs are being broadcast. This is a common problem; on many remotes there's a single button to control captions and it's easy to hit it and change settings without realizing it.

4.14.1 Understanding Viewing Features
Your LCD HDTV features four viewing modes and Picture-In-Picture (PIP)/Picture-by-Picture (POP) mode.
You can switch viewing modes using the remote control.
4.14.2 Viewing Modes
Normal Mode
The original 4:3 aspect ratio (1.33:1 source) is preserved, so black bars are
added to the left and right of the display image. Standard TV broadcasts are
displayed with a 4:3 Aspect Ratio. Movies in 4:3 Aspect Ratio may be referred
to as pan-and-scan or full frame. These movies were originally filmed in 16:9
(widescreen), and then modified to fit a traditional TV screen (4:3).
Wide Mode
When watching a standard broadcast or full-frame movie in this mode,
the display image is stretched proportionately to fill the TV screen.
When watching a widescreen (1.78:1 source) program or movie, the
display image fills the TV screen. If you are watching a widescreen
(1.85:1 or 2.35:1 source) program or movie, there will still be black
bars at the top and bottom.
Zoom Mode
When watching a widescreen (1.78:1, 1.85:1, or 2.35:1 source)
program or movie, the display image is zoomed proportionally to fill the
width of the screen. The top and bottom are cut off to remove most of
the source material’s black bars. This mode is good for programs or
movies with sub-titles.
Panoramic Mode
When watching a standard broadcast or full frame movie in this mode,
the 4:3 Aspect Ratio (1.33:1 source) display image is stretched
horizontally on the left and right sides to fill the TV screen. The center
of the image is not stretched.

Note: Viewing modes are saved based on input. For example, you lasted watched a DVD in widescreen
mode and then watched TV in standard mode. When you switch back to DVD input, the viewing mode
will return to widescreen.

Black menu-like box randomly appears, covering the picture

This is a problem with closed-captioning. What you are seeing is a closed captioning box with no captioning in it. Usually this is being accidentally transmitted by the cable company "head end". Just make sure your closed captioning function is completely turned off. if you are seeing it randomly, it may well be coming from your cable company. Is it just on certain channels?

Black Box at bottom of screen

The text mode has been activated either thru your cable/satelite box or your tv's. It is activated because the closed caption portion. If you think its because of your channel providers call them for the process to deactivate it . If it's your tvs check your menu's to make sure the closed caption portions are turned off. Good luck

you must not have the correct picture settings in the cable box, as although they are not HD they will still be widescreen, so check both tv and box for picture settings.
