Question about IBM ThinkPad i1200 1161 Notebook

1 Answer

IBM ThinkPad i Series 1200

I have a ThinkPad i1200 that has Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition on it. I want to get the Ethernet port working on it but can't find the right driver for it. I downloaded the Ethernet Driver off but it says a error everytime I start it "Its a Windows 2000 Driver for the i1200" Under the Driver download is the Windows XP one, but don't give it, because it says "Inclueded with operating system". The modem connected to the Ethernet port works and thats how i'm on line on this. I downloaded Driver detective but requires to register and pay $20 and I don't want to pay just for a driver that could be found online somewhere to download. It says its a Intel(R) PRO/100 Network Connection, But it says its installed.
I went under My Computer and device manager and shows a yellow ! next to it. I don't know if it has the right driver installed or not. All the info I found on this leads back to a Intel 10/100 Network Connection.

Okay, Where is the Driver to download and I'm not going to be able to get it to work right now due to the Hard Drive went bad, but it was just a 3GB Hard Drive. My best friend wants it and he has a 120GB hard drive he wants in it, with Microsoft Windows XP Professional, But the bad thing is I don't have XP Pro just Home but I have XP Pro Product key. He's going to trade in the IBM ThinkPad T20 that I got him before for the i1200, but doesn't want to run right, It powers on and does 3 or 7 beeps and the Screen stays black, but does power on.

I got the T20 working, It was the RAM, But it was a diffrent type, I was using a Kingston 128MB KTM. I put in a bigger type in that is wider than the one that was in there. So its okay, We thought it was a bad motherboard because we used all kinds of RAM.

As for the Ethernet driver, Im installing Windows right now on it, The ethernet driver is for a R30,R31 but I downloaded it and will try it. What I don't get is I look at my charts and the i1200 and T20 came out in 2000, The T20 came out in Aug witch supports Max RAM 512MB, the i1200 came out in Sep and its Max RAM is 160MB, So I don't know why they didn't make it 512MB for the i because it was a few months newier or even a 1GB. I guess it was because Acer made the i Series and didn't make it 512MB like all the others at that time.

Yeah I don't think this i1200 has a built in WiFi card, He said that he's going to get a PCMCIA WiFi card for it.

What I don't like about this i1200 is the Screen size, Its a waste of plastic, Its like IBM's old 700c ThinkPad. The screen is 14" size but the LCD is 12" size in it.

Try this driver. I've used it on a few I-series Thinkpads that I've had come through my shop. After the download, uninstall the ethernet drive from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the ethernet port and reinstall the drive automatically. If this one doesn't work for you, let me know, an d we'll try a different one.

Sorry, forgot to post the link.

As for the T20, the beeping generally means a bad or unsupported memory chip. Start there with it, and if you need any more help, just ask.

That's exactly it. Acer had the contract to make the i-series, and turns out, there not very good machines, with numerous recalls. The internal wireless was the biggest recall. They either worked or they didn't, and the one that the wireless didn't work on, there was no fix other than replacing the motherboard, and chances are that the wireless wouldn't work on that board either. The wireless worked momentarily then quit on about 8 out of every 10 machines. Needless to say, Acer lost the contract, any future contracts, and now make one of the most troublesome machines on the market.

Hell, I didn't realize who I was talking to. You already know all of this. With the ethernet, there are a couple of different drivers I've used in order to get the i-series to work. Never really had one that just flet didn't work though.

Yeah, had these come through the shop before, and you're right, waste of plastic. The bus card is the way to go with these. I take the wireless card out just to be on the safe side. You might take a look under the keybaord, it could have a card. I really like the cards they put in these, because they have a good range, the drivers are built into XP Pro, and they've worked in every machine I've ever put one into, even the newer machines.

Hi...I just formatted my x61 tablet with windows XP pro...But I cannot get any of the tablet features and touchscreen to work...I have all the updates and lenovo toolbox say everything is installed...did i...

Maybe IBM have some drivers but as XP is obsolete, they may not.

Operating Systems as supplied from new.
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Microsoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit and 64-bit
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005

Are you using XP Tablet Edition as that edition has the drivers for the features?

May be, it depends on the frequency rating of the processors. The 800 is most likey a PC133, if the i-series is a PC133 machine then it will work, however, if it's a PC100 machine, it will not. You will just have to try try it.

Hard Drive

Hi Patrick,

ATA and SATA are basically the same. The SATA drives won't work with the machines that are designed for IDE, so you're stuck with IDE on the I-series. Check out for buying hard drives. You'll be able to get them for half the price Bestbuy sells them for.

I'm not sure what's involved in getting the fingerprint device to work, if it's just a driver or a combination of driver and software. I've never worked with or had one before. I'll look into it. Have you read any of the forums at IBM's support site on this?
