I am having the same problem and just downloaded the manual - apparently the camcorder cannot use the "PRO" version of the card, but I cannot seem to find a "non-PRO" card that is in the GB size.

The non-Pro, non-Duo Memory Stick cards maxed out at 128MB. I found some on eBay. The SCD107, which uses Pro and SD cards too, will only read up to 1GB cards. It chokes on 2GB and falsely reads as less than 1GB!

Did you already formated your memort stick? try to remove your memory card from your camcorder and insert it again. look for the settings on your camcorder. it might cause the problem. hope that helps!

WHAT memory stick do i use for a DCR-PC9E

You probably need the old-style memory sticks, as this is a fairly old camera, or an adapter. See this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_Stick
Adaptors are cheap : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Memory-Stick-Pro-Duo-Adapter-/251482939281?pt=UK_Photography_MemoryCardReaders_RL&hash=item3a8d8d1f91 is but one example, there are lots for sale out there or your sony shop may have one.
You may have to check to see if the camera is capable of reading and writing to a card of 4GB size, but as you have already bought it, it's worth a try.
Hope this helps.

Do i need a sd card o make camera work

You can't make the DCR-HC42 work with an SD card. This camcorder uses DV tapes, or Memory Stick Duo or Memory Stick Pro Duo memory cards.

I have a Sony Memory Stick Duo Adapter with 1 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo insert. When I put in my DCR-TRV18 camera and switch it to Memory, I get Memory Stick Error on the screen

On many cameras , the picture format that you can save on memory stick is not the same that you can have by recording on tapes. It should be the same on your handycam.

You can increase memory stick to at least 2GB, that is what sony reccomends, you can test a 4 gb to 16 gb at the shop, if it works , then buy it.

However, the quality of movies grabbed on memory stick, should be far less than the one of movies recorded on tape.

Memory Stick Pro Duo with adapter not compatible with the camera

I am so sorry my friend, you have same problem as we all have, no memory bigger that 1 gb will work in cameras older than 3 years, I think yours is yes? the camera simply does not see those, sad I know, but that is how it is, I know because I have 3, yes 3 adaptors and 3 big mem bits here, and my money is lost.

Sony CX-12 Camcorder gives message when memory stick inserted

Hi!
This is a feature and not a defect of the CX-12 that reminds the user that the memory stick inserted might not be able to record the data from the camera effectively. HD video requires a memory stick with a relatively fast data read/write speed, and the CX-12 recommends not using any other stick that is not Mark 2.
Fortunately, though, as you have found out, it does not affect the camera's ability to record in non-Mark 2 sticks.
Hope this helps!

"Format error" memory stick PRO DUO

Try photo recovery software to rescue the lost photos and movies, here are some you may rely on. Both programs can also recover videos and music.

Photo Recovery Software (for Windows)
Mac Photo Recovery Software (for Mac OS X)

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to your Sony memory card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

Memory stick error

hi bubba9

if you are using the handy cam just look at the specs on the manual to determine what memory card is compatible. based on your info it is unlikely that the camera even supports 4gig of memory. You should try the smaller sony memory stick up to 2gb only and it should work. good luck
