Side by side whirlpool frig. model ed5phexmb00

My frig. compressor is not clicking on. It acts like it wants to but can't. Just a week ago, I replace the capacitor/starting kit. ( if i named it right). repair man said it turns the compressor on and off. It was blown to pieces on the inside. It worked fine for a week, now it is out again.
Before I repair the capacitor/start-up kit. The frig would defrost itself every few month or so, I would have to turn it off, then turn it back on to restart it.
The fan works fine.
compressor just won't turn on.
Any subjestions? Is it the starter, and where is the starter located.

thanks'
jody, mississippi

Frig seems to be getting no power, not a issue with the outlet. Frig is 8 months old. Is there a reset button somewhere?

You can try unplugging the unit for a few minutes then plug back in. however what u may really want to check is the compressor relay and capacitor. Due u hear a clicking sound down there? feel the compressor vibrating? if the relay is out it will not start and u can buy what is called a 3 in 1 hardstart kit. not that expensive or hard to install, but first I would have the cold control thermostat checked as it may be out and thus no power. U can check it by placing a small screwdriver under it and into the tiny hole located on it. thermostat is usually found inside fridge on top at center, bout 3 inches long and wide. turn the screwdriver slowly till u hear a click then another click and that should turn off the defrost and start the fan and compressor? if it starts u know ur timer is bad

GLRS237ZCB3 stopped cooling, replaced start relay

If there's a buzz then a click it's your overload opening when the compressor doesn't start. Most domestic fridges do not have capacitor assisted start on the compressor, they operate on low back pressure starting. A hard start kit might temporarily solve this . Bottom line your compressor is on the way out.

We have a compact Kenmore frig - it just shut down about a week ago and won't re-start - when I plug it in it just makes a clicking noise ( I am concerned I burned out the motor - but to ice build up)

Your last sentence makes no sense, however Hopefully the motor is not ruined. If still good, then the problem is most likely the start relay that plugs onto the motor. It may have a capacitor with it. The part is easily replaceable; the question is: is ht eproblem the capaciitor, the relay, or the motor? If it is the motor, then you wasted your money on any other part. If it is the capacitor (on some models only) the why buy the relay, and of course if it the relay, why buy the capacitor.
The click you hear is the overload stopping the power to the motor (since it won't start). You are getting into an area that requires test instruments and test procedure knowledge.Perhaps you can take the plug-on parts to someone that can test for you; then at least you will know what direction to go next. GOOD LUCK , MACGIVOR

Freezer not freezing, refrigerator warm, hear clicking sound

sounds like a bad starting capacitor ... thats about a 2 inch container mounted on or near the compressor .. it will have wires attached ... dont let the compressor keep cycling like that .. it will eventually damage the compressor and the refrigerator will quit working before long anyhow .. there is a little cooling now only because the compressor is successful at starting now an then but that wont last long ...unplug the unit until repairs are done .. move your food to another cooler .. the click you hear is the thermal overload switch shutting off the compressor power when it gets too hot .. the starting capacitors are not expensive and may have plug in electrical connectors that will make replacement easy .. it could be soldered in and that would make it a bit more difficult but usually there is a plug .. there will be numbers stamped on the capacitor .. thats what you need to get a replacement .. or you could remove it and take it with you to a parts supplier .. sometimes there are two capacitors in one container .. both have to be changed at the same time in that case (one for the compressor and one for the fan) ... there will be a part number and a value number .. the value might be something like "16 MFD " at 300VAC that gives you the value of the capacitor (not the phisical size) that example would be "16 micro farads" .. the 300VAC is the voltage rating
the part number gives you the size and mounting configuration as well as the value .. make sure the unit is UNPLUGGED before working on the capacitor .. if you call a refrigerator repairman then it should take him only about 15 min to replace the part if he has an equivalent part with him ... you could give him the model number of your frig and that you suspect the "starting capacitor" before he comes out ..so he can bring one with him ..

Please help our ac compressor wont come on

Hi, did you change, capacitor for compressor too. check compressor overload switch,(relay) normally located on compressor terminals, (where you connect wires to compressor) that's the device that goes klix when compressor goes to start, could be faulty, or maybe low voltage from your mains(house panel) check line voltage, with digital volt meter, some compressor won't start if voltage drops to low, yes fan will work, could also be, your compressor has a lock rotor, (hard start), you can buy a compressor hard start kit, from appliance store, and try to start compressor, or maybe compressor internal winding, are damage, especially now in summer, when you got a lots of voltage drops, check compressor winding, check compressor winding for short circuit, remove cover on compressor, remove 3 wires from compressor terminal, use ohm meter, put one tester lead on copper tubing that's connected to compressor, and next lead to compressor terminal, one by one, if you get beep (continuity) from anyone of those compressor terminal, you got a short- circuit in compressor, you will have to replace compressor, but if there's no short, them try hard- start kit, replace overload relay, you will see it at compressor terminal location, after you remove cover. good luck.

We got an a/c central unit goodman modle ckl60-1 and a month a go it broke and the technician said that it needed a new capacitor and freon and about a week ago the unit broke again and the technician said...

When a compressor is has to start. 1. HAs it been off longer than five minutes. As a service tech when I run on to this problem I install a hard start kit and a time delay. The start kit helps the compressor to start under heavy load condtions. The timer helps the compressor to balance out before tryng to start. Have tech set at 5 minutes. I install hard start kits and time delays on all my change outs. Replace problem will go away. Thanks Rus

Gets warm. Shut it off and reset it will work for a couple days.

It could very well be the start relay or capacitor. It also could be the compressor is wearing out. Unplug, remove cover on compressor wiring and mark the wires going to compressor. Take the capacitor to a refrigeration store or have someone check the capacitor. You also could replace the capacitor and start relay with a three in one relay and capacitor combined, that is rated for a refrigerator the size of yours. Get back with me when you find something, Thanks, Sea Breeze

There are a few possibilities here. First, you may have high starting amps on the compressor. You mentioned the run capacitor being changed. I'm not sure if you have a start capacitor, but that should also be checked. If you don't have a start capacitor, I would recommend having a hard start kit installed in the unit. It's basically a start capacitor with an internal relay to take it out of the circuit when the compressor is running, and wires up in parallel to the run capacitor. Also, check all of your line voltage wiring. Make sure all the wiring connections are tight (wire nuts, screw terminals, etc.), and that there's no issue with wiring insulation rubbing off from vibration, etc. Finally, check the points on the compressor contactor. If the contacts are black and pitting, it causes arcing, which means excessive amp draw through the contactor.
