have an electrician check the element wiring as it should only get red when on full heat but then be controlled by the thermostat
it appears that the element is bypassed the thermostat or the thermostat is failed
for the bottom not to get red is a further indication of incorrect wiring of the elements

Oven overheating

Your thermostat is STUCK. Replace. Your 'tripping mains' is your clue that your power is over loaded. Have an electrician check your boxes to make sure all is ok AFTER fixing stove.

Oven is overheating

If it has an electronic control there could be a welded contact on one of the oven relays causing the element to stay energized. A rare thing could be a shorted element that is getting a ground current bypassing the control but this usually will stay on even when the oven is off.

I have a whirlpool accubake duo, super capacity 465 and when I try to bake something the oven wont stay on...how do I get the oven to stay on

What do you mean that it wont stay on? Does it turn off and on during cooking? Does it just go off and wont come back on? The oven thermostat regulates the heat in the oven and the oven element and the oven indicator light will turn off and on during cooking. If it stayed on constantly on full oven element power everything would burn.

Electric fan oven overheating

It sounds like the thermostat is faulty, make sure the sensor is not detached inside the oven compartment, as this will affect the thermostatI if it is. If o/k, then the only option is to replace the thermostat. If it is fan assisted, then make sure the fan is working o/k as well.

This is done to regulate the temperature. Higher heat settings will let the element stay on longer, while lower settings will turn it off sooner. Even on high, the elements may turn off periodically because there is a switch called a temperature limiter. Its job is to keep the element from overheating.

Oven heating element stays on

If element stays on even with oven turned off you probably have a bad main board. A relay on board is probably stuck on. If it stays on, but at a reduced heat...not getting red hot, it may be from a shorted wire causing 110 volts to get to element.

difficult to see what you have done here! can you come back with some info: do you have an earth trip fitted in your consumer unit? how many wires are fitted to the element? did you touch any other wiring except those connected to the element?
