Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I'm using a Magnovox converter box to connect to my analog TV. My problem is that the picture breaks up off and on almost every day. The sound also goes when this happens. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi:
this is usually caused by poor weak digital signal, I would first try changing out the cable box as this is usually the coprit that is causing the error, you might want to look into purchasing a signal amplifier to boost the output signal from the box to the television. Some older boxes do not work good with todays flat panels as the bandwith of the converter is not entirely compatiable with to days Flat panel televisions. Also the newer boxes are digital converters and do not work well with analog televisions, so try changing the box first.

Magnavox converter box. How can I tell if the box is the problem or the TV? I have no picture, but it isn't the picture tube.

I assume that you are attempting to use the Magnavox converter box to convert digital TV signals received by your antenna system into analog signals for use on an older analog (non-digital) TV set. If that is the case then your first step at troubleshooting the problem should be to view the Magnavox installation instructions to ensure that the converter, antenna, and TV are all properly connected.

How to set up vhs taping

Most VCRs need to be connected in a daisy chain or a splitter from your input source. (You may need a tuner with some VCRs these days; either a digital to analog converter for a VCR with an NTSC tuner or a different tuner source.)

If you have analog cable or a cable box with coax out and a VCR with an NTSC tuner, use the daisy chain method. Connect the incoming cable or the coax out from the cable box to the VCR's coax input. Then connect the VCR coax out to the TVs coax input.

For a VCR without a tuner, you'll probably find a RCA composite video line in option on the VCR. Connect your cable box or converter box composite output to the VCR composite in. For an OTA source, you'll need a splitter to send the signal to both the TV and the converter box.

Most TVs do not have a video output option.

I hope this helps.

The picture freezes and the sound is lost. Until the picture returns and the sound returns, this happens every couple of seconds.

If you actually have the Zenith model TV (B25A24Z), the trouble is not in your set. This model has only an analog tuner, and what it sounds like you are describing is digital pixellation. This is what happens with a digital-to-analog converter box when it gets a weak signal, with rain fade or heavy snow on a satellite dish antenna, or when a digital cable system has some signal problems. The converter equipment locks the last complete frame (or breaks up into blocks and freezes) and the sound is muted.

You'll need to look for the cause of your trouble in whatever is feeding the TV. If you have a digital converter box for off-the-air broadcasts, make sure you have a good antenna and all the connections are tight. If you have satellite TV service or digital cable service, you might need to contact your service provider for help in troubleshooting and fixing the trouble.

WHY DOES THE VOLUME GO DOWN WHEN I USE CONVERTER BOX?

You will need to adjust the volume on the tv when using the box. The digital sound is different then the sound coming across on analog signal thus do not expect them to be at the same level. The box is not so dreaded, the picture quality is much better then what you get with analog.

You need to get a converter with an "analog passthrough". The magnavox converter that you have is blocking the analog signal from reaching your TV's tuner. The RCA converters that your friends have must have the analog passthough feature that not all converters have.

Trouble receiving local channels on TV using new Magnavox converter box

Your digital converter box probably does not have an analog pass through that allows the old analog channels to go through to the tv's analog tuner.
