How to find your MAC address using MS-DOS

The MAC address is the physical address your computer's Ethernet card or network interface card (NIC) uses to identify itself to other computers and devices on your network. There are different ways to find your Ethernet card's MAC address, depending on what operating system and programs you have installed. Since most Windows-based computers have access to the MS-DOS command prompt, using DOS to find your MAC address is one standard way to do it.

There are a couple of different tools you can use in MS-DOS to find your MAC address. All of them requiring opening a command prompt window, which you can do by typing "cmd" into the Run bar on the Start menu (or in Windows Vista or 7, you can type it into the Search bar instead).

- Getmac

Getmac is a utility that is included on Windows Vista computers and on newer Windows XP systems. Typing "getmac" by itself on a command line will return the MAC addresses of any NICs that you have installed in your computer. (If you have an Ethernet NIC and a wireless NIC, for example, Getmac will list the MAC addresses for both of them.)

- Ipconfig

Ipconfig is a command that will display your IP address if you are currently connected to a network. However, by adding the "/all" switch to it, you can also see your MAC address, as well as many other configuration settings. Type "ipconfig /all" and look for the line labeled "Physical Address." If you have more than one NIC, the MAC address for each NIC will be displayed separately.

Does the producer of my Sony Vaio has my Mac address?

The MAC address of the LAN or wireless card is unique address (like a house number in your street in your town, state and country).
If you have not taken recorded this MAC address then you cannot supply this info.
There are millions of MAC address and Sony most likely do not have this info. If you have registered this laptop with Sony they might have this info.

F7D3302v1 installed eventually but Belkin Setup screen appears every time someone logs on to wireless network. Please Help ! Thanks, SP

Routers include a security feature that allows you to specify which computers or wireless devices are allowed on your wireless network.
This feature is called "MAC Address Control" and only works with wireless devices.

Setup steps:
You can normally find your device's MAC address printed on the back or within its software interface. Please refer to your device's manual for more information.

If you have a Belkin adapter, you can find the MAC address on the product label.

  1. Open a web browser on the computer.
  2. In the address bar of the web browser, type http://192.168.2.1.
  3. Click Login in the upper right-hand corner of the page. The router does not ship with a password, so just click Submit.

  4. Click on "MAC Address Filtering" under Firewall in the menu on the left.

  5. Here you can enter the MAC addresses of each device that you want to allow or deny.

Every Ethernet card has a MAC address burned-in at the factory. At times, you may want to change this MAC address to one of your own choosing.
The procedures to change a MAC address are specific to each operating system.

No Internet With New Router, Computer, or Adapter

This document is relevant if you had an Internet connection, but lost it when: * Adding a router to your network, or * Using a different Ethernet adapter card or computer than the one your ISP used during installation. Use ISP Configuration to see whether you need to "spoof a MAC address" to connect to your ISP. If so, follow the instructions in this document. If the Ethernet card that was used during ISP installation is not available, you may need to register the new Ethernet card's MAC address with your ISP for the following to work. MAC address stands for Media Access Control address (not "Macintosh computer"!), a unique number built into modems, routers and other network hardware. It ensures that one piece of equipment is not mistaken for another one. Some ISPs validate your connection by checking the MAC address of the Ethernet adapter in computer that was registered during ISP installation. If you add a router or change computer or Ethernet adapter, these ISPs will drop your Internet connection, because they find the MAC address of the newly added router or adapter, instead of the one they expect. To fix this, change the router to report the Ethernet adapter's MAC, instead of its own. This is called "spoofing the MAC address". To find a PC's or Macintosh's MAC address, see How to Find an Adapter's MAC address : http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=252225&thid=102075. To Spoof a MAC Address 1. Connect the computer that your ISP's installers used to establish Internet connection to the router. If you are unsure which computer was used, call your ISP, and ask what MAC address was registered. Then, using the instructions in the box below find the computer whose MAC address matches their records. 2. Disconnect other computers from the router. (If you do not want to disconnect other computers, you need to know the adapter's MAC address, as described in the box below. Then, in step 6, type Use This MAC Address, entering the adapter's address.) 3. In an Internet browser type the address 192.168.0.1. 4. Type admin for the username, password for the password, and click OK. 5. Go to the Basic Settings > Router Mac Address. 6. Select Use Computer MAC Address. 7. Click Apply. This automatically gives the router the computer's MAC address. 8. Click Test to make sure you are connected. If you are not connected, contact your ISP.
