Fedders dehumidifier freezing

Same freezing problem with a 3 year old fedders.  Where is the sensor supposed to be located? I opened mine and found the sensor loose, but could not tell where it was mounted.

There was a clip (rusted off) that held mine to the evaporator coil. I used a wire tie to hold it between 2 evaporator coils.

You'd be hard pressed to find a Fedders like yours. They've been out of business for several years.

There are several basic things that can cause what you described.

1. The humidity extraction level is improperly set. Lower the level to 32-35%

2. A dirty of clogged air intake filter. Turn the unit OFF unplug it and remove the filter for cleaning.

3. Obstructed air space. A dehumidifier requires a minimum of 12" clear air space around the entire
unit.

4. The ambient air temperature at floor level is between 40 & 60 Degrees F. Dehumidifiers do not work well in that temperature (Except low temp models). This especially true in a basement application, because the air temperature at floor level is colder than say, chest level. Raising the unit up off the floor onto a sturdy table, cabinet top, etc, that can handle the weight of the unit, plus a full tank of water, will normally resolve that problem.

5. The cooling coils are dirty and need to be cleaned.

Critical problems:
1 The humidity sensor has failed an needs to be replaced.

2.The compressor is low on refrigerant gas and needs to be recharged.

Sometimes the repairs (Time spent finding, the Parts & labor), if necessary, can cost almost as much or as much as a new unit, which would have a full warranty.

Hope this helped you troubleshoot the basic and solvable problems and you won't need to make any critical repairs. Please let me know. Thanks.

Buck, as you seem to be aware, Fedders no longer exist as the Fedders you may have been familiar with 8 years ago. Finding manuals and parts, is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. However, the new company Airwell-Fedders may be able to help you. There Customer Support Dept 866-829-2440, is who you need to contact.

There is one other possible source, as some parts are interchangeable. Appliance Factory Parts
http://www.appliancefactoryparts.com/airconditioners/fedders/ does carry some of the older Fedders Parts, as well as Maytag. So, that may be worth a try.

Hope this helps you find the parts you need. Good luck and please let me know how it worked out for you. Thanks.

The dehumidifier runs all day but there is only a little water being produced. We have humidity set at 35%, and the actual readings are much higher. This is only a year or so old. The last machine worked...

coolant may be low - warranty should be 5 years

If the room temperature is close to 60, the coils may be frozen (completely encased in ice). If this is the case, move it where the water can drain off - about 1 gallon which may NOT run into the drain bucket.
I out mine over the floor drain.
Turn off and it will defrost over night.
Only specially made dehumidifiers work below a room temp of 60 degrees (the temp of a basement in winter).
Does it need to be running? A digital humidity sensor from Radio Shack is cheap and may tell you the humidity is OK - only 50% or less.

Mine does the same thing, for the third time. Seems the plastic fan on mine, lasts a little over a year. Not hard to change, just a bad design on the part. I'm ordering an extra tis time, to save on freight.

Humidifier is freezing up

I have the same dehumidifier and it does the same thing. but I was able to fix mine. It was not low on refridgerant. There is a temp. sensor clamped to the evaporater coil with a thin metal clip. The clip rusted out and the sensor fell out of position. I used a small stainless steel hose clamp and clamped the sensor back into position. It now works fine

Mine broke recently too, although it's 4 and a half -- also under the 5 year warranty.  Maytag won't honor the warranty claiming that Fedders made it.  Fedders simply won't honor the warranty.  Made in China -- any surprise?  So, now I've got a broken appliance under a warranty that no one will honor.  To make matters worse, no one even fixes Fedders in my area (DC suburbs) and to dispose of it will cost me $40!  I'm thinking of taking it back to Home Depot (where I bought it) and telling them to return it to the manufacturer.  Are there any lawyers out there?  Class action anyone?

if it does not get cold anymore, then a freon charge is necessary, provided the compressor was not damaged from "left it on for a long time once and found that ice had developed on it. I know that being left on could cause a problem"
