Toshiba laptop wont boot correctly. Upon start up it flashes blue screen. Does not recognize optical drive to try to fix windows 8 or reinstall windows 8.1.

Sounds like the hard drive has an issue. Do you hear a very faint clicking sound when it tries to boot up? put your ear near the front of the laptop, bottom of keyboard area and listen for a clicking sound. if you hear a click click click click sound repeating continuously, its a failing hard drive. If you hear ths sound, you will need to buy a replacement hard drive. Replacing it is easy. Turn your laptop upside down and look for the small door that houses your hd. Unscrew the door and take hard drive out. Now you take this hard drive to Staples and ask them for a replacement. Once you know what you need, whether Sata or IDE hard drive, you can buy a replacement cheaply on eBay or buy it from any computer store. pop the hard drive back in and then you should be able to install a new operating system on the laptop. If you do not hear a clicking sound, then you may have a corrupted windows boot. Have you tried booting in safe mode? as you turn the power on, hold down the f8 button. You will get a screen asking if you want to boot in safe mode. Select, safe mode with networking. If it boots normally in safe mode, you can then put in your windows cd and do a repair. If you cannot boot into safe mode, and you have tried replacing hard drive, but cd/dvd is still not working, then you may need o take it in or diagnostics. You can buy very cheaply on eBay, a connector that will allow you to connect your hard drive to another computer via USB. This will allow you to test the hard drive and also possibly get data of of it, provided the hard drive is not too badly damaged. I hope this helps.. Please ask any questions you might have.

a. Click Start, type services.msc and hit ENTER.

b. Locate Windows Time.

c. Right-click and select Restart.

there can be a number of things that can halt the boot process
bios settings not right
bad or faulty leads
faulty bootmanger

make sure there are no disks in cd floppy usb drives

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE)) make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty

if its a flat ribbon 40 pin IDE it will be the fist to fail

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs data and power to travel through every working device and to continue its cycle and to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
also make sure you have set it boot from you hard drive in BIOS
During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the using arrow key scroll down to advanced bios features press enter make sure your first boot device is set to your hard drive press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

If there was no clicking sound before and now there is after you installed a hard drive (goes click...click...click) then that is bad. A clicking sound is what you never want to hear from a hard drive. Means it's bad.
Fans don't make clicking sounds.

My Toshiba L640 model encountering this problem. the time i open my computer the Toshiba logo appears and the F2 to utility system and F12 for the boot if you will allow the computer to proceed without...

That means the hard drive has failed. You'll likely need a new hard drive. Go into the utility system using F2 and see if it still sees the hard drive. If it does, and you don't hear something going "click, click, click" or "kchunk, kchunk, kchunk", there's hope. If you don't hear those noises, and can borrow a Windows disk to boot from, you might be able to correct the issue running the check disk utility.

I would recommend you turn it over to someone that really knows what they're doing.

I am having Seagate Free Agent Go Flex and its not running on the computer just making sound errors.

Hello abhi_1998s,
This usually indicates a bad hard drive. If you are hearing grinding and its not connecting to your computer, check your warranty. If you're hearing it connect to the machine then disconnect, try a different cable. If this does not work, contact the manufacturer's technical support because it could be a known issue.
If you need to recover data from the drive please halt from any further use of the drive. Hearing grinding noises is a very serious issue if you're going to attempt data recovery.
Hope this helps!

I have a laptop HP Compaq 6720s and now I get the following code t.w. 0x4001001300001002 and when I will restarted the computer the message boot.mgr missing. What must I do?

That error means that the Boot Manager is Missing. This is usualy caused by either a failed hard drive, or a failed attempt at recovery. If you try to do a recovery and then suddenly halt the process, weather on purpose or due to somthing like power failure, then the first bit of the Recovery boot process, the BTMNGR, can be hosed. If this happens then your only option is to order recovery disks from the manufacturer and install the OS that way.

You might boot into bios (F10 on startup) and do a hard drive self test first to make sure you dont have a hard drive problem...

It clicks alot when it's booting and i can't get it to turn all the way on. It says fixed disc parameter table or bios error system halted

It seems as if your hard drive has failed or is going to fail. When you hear a clicking noise like that with no CD in the system that is usually what the cause is.

Hard drive failure - Compaq N400

Yes, your hard drive may have serious problems. Does the machine have a floppy drive? If so, will it boot to DOS? Or, if you have an XP or linux install CD, will it boot from CD?

Can you hear the hard drive spin up when computer is powered on? Some drives are very quiet, so you might have to put your ear close. Does the drive have an abnormal clicking sound? Western Digital drives were famous for this symptom of failure.

Try swapping the drive into a spare or friend's computer. If the symptoms are nearly identical (no boot), then this points to the drive as failed. Note, that if it does get part way through the boot process, your Operating system (XP, 2000) may blue screen, instead of completely booting. But, if it does get that far, there may be more hope for the drive.

Suggest also you download manufacturer's diagnostic software and run it.

Hard drive failures are very common, some happening within the warranty period or shortly thereafter. This is why backing up your data to CD, flash drive, or other media is so important.
