If the drive no longer reads CD's or DVD's even if they have no scratches on them, this means that the lens is already not able to read. this also means that you need to replace it already. This is common with lens that have already burned out normally due to wear and tear.

My computer doesn't recognize the cd\dvd drive.

Try going to Dell and checking for updated drivers for the CD/DVD drive. Also check you bios to see if its even being reconized by the system bios. If not then the drives electronics has probably failed and it will need to be replaced. Also before doing this go to control panel and click on systems then device manager and remove any drivers listed for the drive by right clicking on the drive name and selecting porperties. Delete the drives drivers and restart the system window should reload the appropriate driver automatically. If same error occurs then check the bios to see if the system sees it. Check all power cables going to the drive.

I'm having problem with my Fanthom USB drive...all of a sudden my Mac G5 is not reading my Fanthom drive...the external drive blue light is on but it doesn't flicker the orange to blue anymore...and so the...

I had one of these external drives from the same manufacturer and had the exact same problem.

Based on my own experience I would suspect the enclosure has died.

The drive inside of mine was completely functional.

I simply mounted the drive in another enclosure.

CDDVD RW drive won't open /won't burn CD

Drive is more than likely fried. It's not uncommon to have DVD/CDRW drives or any burning drive go bad especially if you use it frequently. Check www.newegg.com for a replacement they shouldn't be more than 30 dollars for a decent model now.
