ratios can range from 25:1 gas to oil and go up to 50:1 for certain specially blended oils for the high performance professional grade trimmer. If you can't find the mix ratio anywhere for your trimmer, start a mix at the lower end, around 30:1. Run through a tank of that while trimming, and take careful note of the acceleration and high-speed performance. Slowly lean out the mixture up to 40:1 and run another tank of gas. If the engine's slow or sluggish or has poor high-end performance, you can lean the formula up to 50:1, but note if your engine isn't designed to handle this, you can wear out seals, rings and other sensitive parts in your internal engine with a too lean mixture

so start by running a 30:1 ratio and see how that goes for you I know I run a 40:1 myself for my husqavarna

50 :1 is using top quality 2 stroke oil
and is 20 mills of oil per 1.0 litre of petrol that you mix

i remember it as 1000 divided by 50 = 20 therefore 20 mils per litre
is 50:1 ratio

Need to know fuel mix for mcCulloch gladiator 550 petrol hedge trimmer

I don't know the age of this machine, but more and more of the newer units are using a 50:1 mix to satisfy the newest EPA emissions regulations. I suggest using a synthetic or synthetic blend of 2 stroke oil. ....the big box stores sell the oil...Echo one of the best. I would use synthetic and mix it 40:1. Here is a fuel mix chart to show you how many ounces of oil in a gallon of gas that is. If you make a 1/2 gallon batch of fuel mix, just use half of the listed oil amount for the mix.

http://support.mtdproducts.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/347/~/two-cycle-engine-fuel%3Aoil-mixture-chart

40:1 is 3.2 ounces of oil in a gallon of gas...or 1.6 ounces of oil in a half-gallon of gas

The fact that your engine turns over easily with the spark plug removed simply means that, with the plug removed, there is no compression, so the piston goes up and down very easily.
If it has been a while since you ran the machine, and if you left gas in it, your carb may have gotten gummed up from the gas losing it viability and turning to something like varnish. You might try spraying carb cleaner into the carb (with the air filter removed), let it sit for a few minutes, then try starting. In the future, you probably should get some fuel stablizer (available at almost any hardware store) and add it to the fuel that you use for your small machines. It will keep the gas viable for a much longer period of time.
Hope that you are lucky enough that the carb cleaner, a good dose, will work. If not, you may have to disassemble and clean out your carb. (if you've never done that, a series of digital camera photos so you know where to put things back is a good idea).

What ratio of oil do you reccomend for the

Depending on the age of the McCulloch cutter it could be 25:1 32:1 or on rare occasions 50:1.
Regardless you can't go wrong with 32:1. This ratio can be used in ANY 2 cycle engine with great results.
