Check your system bios to ensure that ata is your chosen hard drive for installation. if you attempt to install on the mother boards default of ahci wich is windows vista or 7 default it will not work in order to install windows xp you must choose ata. as far as weather a 64 bit install is necessary, 32 bit will work on both but 64 bit windows must be installed on a 64 bit motherboard.

How to change an operating system on the c:/ drive without destroying the information on the drive. Your email address: JCMCJMC68@YAHOO.COM

Your motherboard has to accept 64 bit OS before anything. If it is 32 bit only it will never load a 64 bit operating system. The easiest way to keep all your pictures, music and any other data files is to transfer them to an external USB drive. If you don't have the original software installation disks the software you have on the C drive won't run because the registry will have to be rebuilt. If you do get the 64 bit version of 7 to work, you'll have to upgrade most of your existing software to 64 bit versions. Example: installing a 32 bit version of Word will not run on a 64 bit machine.

Can't detect XP discs in win 64 bit

Hello Joe, 64-bit processing is faster than 32-bit processing because the CPU is handling more bits at once, However, a 64-bit OS requires more resource than a 32-bit OS, A 64-bit OS requires that device drivers operating in kernel mode be a 64-bit drivers, These drivers must be available from the device manufacturer. An application is compiled to process 64-bit or 32-bits. A 64-bit OS can run either 64-bit applications or 32-bit applications, but 64-bit applications are faster also 64-bit applications cannot run on a 32-bit OS.
A 32-bit OS can only address up to 4 GB of memory, More than that might be on the motherboard, but the OS cannot use it, because it does not have enough memory addresses to assign to the physical memory. A 64-bit OS theoretically can address up to 1 terabyte of memory although in practice, most motherboards can only hold from 12 to 16 GB of memory.( A terabyte is roughly 1000 GB or 1 trillion bytes). If you open many applications at the same time and have high computing needs and enough hard drive space and memory, you can benefit from 64-bit computing. To get most out of it, the processor, motherboard, operating system, drivers and applications must all be 64-bit, and you should have installed the maximum amount of memory the motherboard supports.

HI,
chances are that you simply do not have the resources to run windows 7. These are the basic (recommended minimum), for windows 7

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
  • 1 more GB of RAM & 15 GB more HDD space to run 7 in XP Mode.

These are the typical resources that come with your machine.

  • Processor Pentium M 1.73 GHz
  • Ram Installed Size 512.0 MB
  • Technology DDR2 SDRAM
  • Hard Drive 40.0 GB

  • OS Provided Microsoft Windows XP Professional
It would probably be advisable to go back to XP
Good luck

I can't to install Windows vista 64 bit within a 32 bit

hi,
If you have a 32-bit version of Windows XP and want to install a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you must boot the computer from the 64-bit Windows Vista DVD and then perform a custom installation of Windows Vista. Back up data before you start the custom installation.

Best operating system for new build?

Either Windows XP or Vista 64 bit edition, depending on what you like...I won't get into the xp vs. vista battle here lol. The 64 bit operating systems can see all of your memory, with the 32 bit OS's, you're limited to around 3 or so gigs. Do note, that there may be some incompatibilities with a 64 bit operating system, though most programs should run fine.
