Hi, I have tried resetting and the drive and updating the firmware like you recommended, but it is still the same.

Hi, I tried both options, the reset and downloaded the firmware; but still the same

  • colin_arnold May 30, 2011

I've updated the firmware and still the same.
I don't know how to run a scandisc session
What are the consequences of formatting the drive, how will I get it running again?

  • colin_arnold Jun 02, 2011

Did the scandisk ok, tried to format and got the message "windows was unable to complete format"

  • colin_arnold Jun 02, 2011

The format defaults to exFAT, with no other choices

Hi! Thanks for using FixYa! Although it would be helpful to know what operating system you are using on your PC, I 'm going to provide you with a few solutions that may solve the problem. If they don't, please reply with your operating system specifications. Thanks.

  1. First, attempt to do a firmware update through Archos. Firmware updates can be found here.
  2. After running a firmware update, run a ScanDisk session on its hard drive. This should solve your problem. If not...
  3. Format your hard drive.

    1. Follow the instructions here for XP to run ScanDisk, except don't selct "C" drive, select the drive letter associated with your device. This procedure is also explained on page 96 of your user's manual, here.

    2. Follow the instructions here for Windows Vista to run ScanDisk

    3. Follow the instructions here for Windows 7 to run the Windows 7 equivalent of ScanDisk.

    4. No, formatting will not damage your device and your manual specifically states that you can do this (page 95) to remove all data (media) on the device. Since the device doesn't have any media (the demo media on it are probably integrated into the hardware itself so if you format the drive and the demo media still appears, don't be concerned).

    5. As noted, ScanDisk, according to Archos' FAQ, should solve the problem. DO NOT format the hard drive until you perform ScanDisk.

    6. If these steps do not solve the problem, you may have a defective device and should contact Archos support, here.

One more thing, your device does not run off of the hard drive. The firmware update might, however, but the operation of the device is not dependent of the hard drive, so when you format the drive, the device will still operate normally (but you will probably need to do the firmware update again).

You need to contact Archos. According to to them, running ScanDisk should have solved the problem. Formatting the disk just brings everything back to zero and should also resolve the problem and if you can't format the disk you have a problem. However, just to be clear, when you format the drive it has to be formatted in FAT32 not NTFS. Here's the contact information for Archos customer support:

That is the reason why you got IO error! that means your av700 hd may be in need to be changed.
Best thing to do is trying format again, if you cannot format again from av700 you need to remove AV700 drive and change it.
