Simple test to find out if the files are still there: boot from a Linux Live -Cd like
connect the WD to the pc then open it in there. If the files are in there you will be able to recover (copy or move them) to another location. If they are not - you still have just shortcuts - then something has been done to them, either by a virus or by someone else. Whatever it is the files are gone, try to find them in the trash - RECYCLER is the name with which the Trash Can is represented as a real folder in every partition, If the files are not there then your only hope is to use a recovery software like
on the WD and see what you can recover.
