Whirlpool DU1145 won't start. Tried the test mode

I'll try the reset. The door latching properly and continuity on the door switch wouldn't seem to be an issue since it will run through a complete test cycle... implying neither one of those are not operating properly, but I could be wrong.

  • mbarber292 May 29, 2011

No luck. Guess, I need to tear it down to get to the door switch. Any pointers?

  • mbarber292 May 30, 2011

ok, easy enough. I checked the switches both are working fine (used a multimeter and checked both open and closed state of switches). I restored power to the unit and then closed the switches and the system came on like it was doing a drain. After verifying the switches I checked the buttons on the front panel... same symptoms. The Start button does not respond, but the other buttons do. I'm beginning to think its the logic board, but, I've never worked on these so I have no idea. If you have a schematic, could you feed me some test points and readings (in a former life I was an electrician).

  • mbarber292 May 30, 2011

I don't seem to be communicating very well. The only button NOT working is the Start button. I can press other buttons and get some lights to come on. However, I cannot start a cycle. Pressing the Start button does nothing. This means I get no glowing lights when power is applied. I'll do whatever I need to. I think the question comes down to either the CCU is broke or what situation would cause the Start button to stop responding. Before I start pulling the unit out I'd like to see how to test (hopefully at the CCU) if the float switch or other remote switches are working. There does not seem to be any water in the unit. I can hear the float switch when I manually actuate the float, so it isn't stuck. I'm not sure what other sensors exist and which ones would deactivate the Start button.

  • mbarber292 May 30, 2011

While I haven't fixed it yet. The details in this response are what I feel I need to resolve the issue.

    Thanks.

  • mbarber292 May 30, 2011

    excellent. will do. thanks.

  • mbarber292 May 30, 2011

    Jackpot.. found the schematic. Thanks.

  • mbarber292 May 30, 2011

    Last question I hope...
There is a troubleshooting step on the sheet. "Checking keypad operation" - the results are as follows
"If the control is OK, it will respond by turning on a Drain Motor for 2 minutes. Check and/or replace the keypad if the control responds OK"
Can I get just a keypad?

  • mbarber292 May 30, 2011

No worries. I understood. The best price I've found so far is about $208.. ugh. Still better to know. I've been to that site, a little on the high side compared to what I've found. Thanks for the help.

Hi.

The light flashing it is not an error code. The dishwasher tries to drain because you press the pause button. When you press pause, if there is water Cancel/Drain glows, the dishwasher pauses for about 5 seconds and starts a 2-minute drain . When the dishwasher drains all the water the light goes off. If the light stays on, then the dishwasher cannot drain either because of a problem with drain system or because of a defective control board.

If the appliance does not even start cycling, there is noise, and there is water inside the appliance, then the problem is drain/overflow. If there is no water, start checking from the overfill switch.
If the dishwasher bottom looks dry either there is water trapped in the corners or in the bottom panel, or the drain hose is set incorrectly, and water is flowing back from the drain line, triggering the overflow device. If there is no water and drain hose is fine you will check the overfill device for faults.

Pull out the dishwasher and check the drain hose height and elbow. Ensure that settings are as specified in the user manual. If elbow height is incorrect you get water flowing back from drain inside the dishwasher. That is detected as overfill.
Remove the drain hose and put it in a bucket, then try tilting the dishwasher 45 degrees backward, secure it safely (ask help if needed) and start cycle, so that water trapped at the bottom can be released. Put the drain hose to correct settings and put back the appliance in place if this solves the problem.

If that does not help, then parts must be tested.

Check the drain well again.Open the housing, and remove water present in there . The overfill switch is connected to the float and can also be responsible of the problem. The switch itself can be tested jumping its contacts or using a multimeter to read Ohms at switch contacts. With contacts jumped no overfill will be detected and machine will start working (stop cycle manually after machine begins filling).

If that does not help, go for the rest. Do not replace parts without testing. Check again inlet hose, check spray arms and impeller. Next step would be reading volts from CCU (central control module), and eventually replacing the control module

Test first the drain system, which is the possible culprit.

Disconnect power before performing any maintenance operation.

Regards.

Hi. The start button is a switch integrated in the button board. If the machine starts and performs the diagnostic cycle OK, then the problem is the button board or the connector in control board. The diagnostic cycle use the same relay to startup the cycle (the relay is one of those three black boxes at one side of the board). Only the buttons used to start are different, hence problem is either button switch or soldering/connector on main board.

The fascia panel is over $200. Before replacing it test parts. First test the connector coming from fascia panel.

First test the button. Button configuration in connector is not listed in service manual. At the bottom an extract from a different service document covering different Whirlpool models. Try the different configurations. Put multimeter on Ohms. If a button is good the two contacts corresponding to the button must open and close (pass from infinity to zero) when you press the button. If the table does not apply to your module, keep on button pressed and find out which two pins in connector read zero. Those correspond to the button.

If you find that button is opening and closing, then test one by one the solder joints on control board connector located at the opposite side of the relays. Set the multimeter on impedance. For each pin on control board ensure that contact is not open (infinity of Ohms) between control board pin and solder joint on the other side.

I wanted to add to check behind the toe panel to see if there is a technical sheet in a sealed envelope.

    Hi.

    Sorry I was online.

As I said the keypad is probably what you need to replace. The keypad is integrated with the panel and is an expensive part, usually over $200. To find parts and diagrams select the complete model number from the list on this website. If your model is not listed, select Home in the part website, and enter your model number in the box.

    All the best.

I wanted to add a clarification on parts name:

1 Part is the fascia panel with button. That is the keypad or control panel.
1 Part is the plastic box with inside the control board. That is the control module or CCU.
The two modules are connected through a cable.

You probably need to replace the keypad (control panel).

See my last comment with link to parts seller.

    Good luck.

Hi

Reset the power to the dishwasher and unplug it for 10-15 minutes. Try and check after 15 minutes what LED's are blinking. Also make sure the door is latching properly and there is continuity present on door switch.

Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

Hi

If clean light is blinking then it may be an issue with heater circuit, door switch or wash pump, please reset the power to the dishwasher. After, 5 minutes check if you are still getting the same error. If yes, then it is a water heating fault. To resolve this error try pressing this reset sequence-- Heat Dry - Normal - Heat Dry - Normal or High Temp - Air Dry - High Temp - Air Dry or Hi Temp Scrub, energy saver dry, Hi Temp Scrub, energy saver dry. Now let the unit run for 2-3 minutes and then you press the Cancel/Drain button and allow it to completely drain and reset. If this doesn't work then it's an issue with the wash pump not pumping the water past the heater efficiently or due to lack of water to heat. Please make sure that heater is not open circuited and is heating the water efficiently. You'll have to check the heater using a multimeter; the meter should read between 3000 to 3300 ohms (Use multimeter on Rx1 ohm setting). If heater is fine then make sure water pressure is optimum and fill valve is working fine. Hope this helps... Please post back if you need more information.

you'll need to enter a diagnostic mode, press in this order, hi-temp(sani-rinse)----heated dry--hitemp---heated dry... all lights should light, close door and let cycle for about a min, after press the cancelbutton, you should be good to go, the buttons on your model may read slighty different names, if this "toggle of buttons" does not work, you can remove thelower access panel and htere willl be a tech sheet/trouble shoooter behind the panel, in there it will explain how to enter diag/test mode
