Question about Yard Machines 155 Torque Briggs Stratton Riding Lawn Mower (NonCARB Compliant) 13AM772F000

5 Answers

I have a Yard Machines by MTD, 638 RL, Model 13A1762F, 13.5 HP, Tecumseh engine. Yesterday, after using it without incident, it died while putting it away. The engine turns over, there is fresh gas in the tank. The spark plug fires and a shot of starting fluid in the carb does nothing. Any ideas?

Just checked the flywheel key. It is good. (was sorely hoping that was the problem)

Anyone else have any suggestions? My Yard Machines 638 RL will not start. Engine turns over, spark plug fires, fresh gas and flow to carb is good, starting fluid in the carb has no effect, timing key is intact.
Could it be a safety switch somewhere keeping the engine from starting?

Recently had same problem with this machine with a Tecumseh 17.5hp. There is a solenoid on the bottom of the fuel bowl that controls fuel flow inside the carb. It is controlled by the ignition switch. Mine got stuck in the closed position. I could not find a replacement, so a small engine mechanic told me I could disable this by removing the solenoid and cutting off the pin. This worked for me. Then, for safety, put a fuel cutoff valve in the fuel line.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like you need the carb cleaned. This can be a pretty tedious job. It's easier with small engines but still risky. If you have a lot of mechanical experience I would go for it, but if not you should take it into a repair shop. http://www.bensalemlawn.com

There might be something wrong with the engine. While your lawn care equipment is different from my car, my car was doing something similar a few months ago. I can't remember what exactly was wrong with it, but I can recommend having a professional mechanic look at it. We can't be as much help since we can't look at the engine.

Air is not getting into the engine, clean the air filter. Or it may be due to a fuel blockage in the pipe. I would clean the air filter and the carberator.
First try just the air filter, you may just get away with it ey! Won't be too much work.

Take care!

Did it possibly shear the flywheel key?which would throw it out of time, remove the top cover and see if the key is sheared off by removing the flywheel

also what color is the spark ? blue or dull orange?and is it a large healthy spark at the spark plug?,possible the ignition module is getting weak or its ground is bad due to a rusty high resistance connection, check this also as grounds are important in ignition systems too or the flywheel is just rusty enough to limit the pick-up modules signal, check the flywheel for rust also, and kill or distort the spark impulse signal too

Is it hard to change a magneto on a 5.5 hp Tecumseh engine?

How old is the gas in the tank? If it is older than 2 months drain it out and put in fresh gas and try again. Have you seen spark jump across the spark plug gap? To check for spark I use a spark checker. One end goes to the plug and the other to the spark plug lead. If you have spark you see a light flash which is more easy to see.

I have Yard Machine 638 RL, Model 0V358EA, 13,5 hp. I want to change the Oil engine how many litter must put oil in the engine

The Tecumseh OV358EA 13.5hp takes one quart of oil, 32oz or 39oz with filter. Use 30W except if it is used in very cold climates. MTD makes a drain tool for around $5 that clips onto the drain plug area and allows you to direct the draining oil into a container with a lot less mess.

I'm assuming you have a Tecumseh engine on there. But a Briggs would be the same. This is straight from Tecumseh, though (long story short is run 5W30 Oil or 0W30 Synthetic in it assuming winter temperatures:

I have an old hssk50-67244 with the extended cam shaft(pto).. Can I buy a new Lh195sa engine and swap cams and cover

Yes. But horizontal crank PTO engines were in production untill Tecumseh died at the end of 2008, so you should be able to find the right engine.

If you go the 'donor engine' route, replace the lifters as well. It will sound like a bag of nails after 50 hours if you don't.

Looking for a carburetor for a yard machines mtd

You may have better luck in identifying the engine type and manufacture (Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, etc) and get the number of the engine vs the machine itself, if possible. If you are able to do this, you can search ebay or the net for a wider range of possibilities for a purchase.

My mtd tradesman lawn mower does not run smooth. where is the idle mixture adj. screw? the engine is the tecumseh 5.5 hp model #VLV55 501029A(D)

These engines do not have an idle mixture adjustment. Most of the problems with them not running right are from bad gas, water in fuel, or carburetor jet deposits. If your fuel is ok, then you'll want to clean the carburetor metering hole. You'll want to either empty the fuel, or clamp the fuel line, but after that, take the nut off the bottom of the carburetor bowl. You will see holes both in the sides, and through the middle. Use a wire to clean these out, and some acetone or carburetor cleaner to get the rest of the deposits out, and you should be fine.
