Question about Kenmore Dryers

1 Answer

My Kenmore 970C85092 dryer will not start. Belt is OK but there is a slight burning smell. Could it be the motor? If so, how do I check and replace?

Usually this is NOT the motor, but lint getting into the burner. Inspect that area.

From your description, the dryer belt could be in need of replacement. The burning smell could come from the motor pulley spinning and trying get a grip to turn the drum.

My kenmore 86161100 wont start. the breaker was 1/2 tripped and i smelled a burning. I reseated the breaker, ran the dryer, it low growled and i smelled the burn again. What part do i need? Motor? Belt?...

sounds like the motor bearings are beginning to seize up from heat/age or the combination of both, remove the front and top cover to remove the drum if there is no access in the rear to remove the belt off the motor so you can start the dryer or free wheel the motor by hand and see if it is beginning to turn hard

My dryer will run for about 30 seconds then kick the breaker off and smells like something is burning. could this be a belt going bad and putting excessive drag on the motor?

That or a heater coil high limit switch has blown. The high limit switch is a safety device that prevents the dryer from getting too hot and catching fire. I would check the belt and motor first bt removing the back and checking the belt and motor by hand turning the dryer drum and observing the belt and motor. If the motor is bad or going bad you should see signs of slight charring at the air vent holes onm the motor and you will for sure smell it. Good luck

Kenmore gas dryer made a loud buzzing sound and didn't start. I smelled burnt rubber smell. Dryer is totally unresponsive now. Breaker is ok, power is on.

Sounds like the belt has burned and broken. There is a switch on the tensioner that will not let the motor run if the belt breaks.

Dryer smells like something is burning. Heard a snap but checked the belt and it is intact.

The burning smell usually comes from an overheating motor. Onces it heats to a certain point, it will trip the thermal switch on the motor. Motor should be getting around 11 amps. Best of luck :)

Dryer will not start

try to check the switch. sometimes due to high starting current of motors, the switch deteriorates. also include the wirings if there is continuity, loss connections, etc. If ok, then try to access the motor for any foul smell or traces of burns. check the motor winding if it is colored black then it must have burned. this needs to be rewind.
