Configuring dlink 1320

Wirelessly or cable ?
D-Link Router to an AT&T DSL Modem
With an always-on, high-speed Internet connection like DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), a router is a prudent addition to your local network.
It filters out unauthorized access to your network, which prevents an intruder from accessing computers that are connected to that network.
However, getting your computers, routers and modems on the same page may not work right "out of the box."
There are a few things you must be aware of, especially if this is a wireless network.

Unplug your DSL modem and D-Link router.
In order for the network to properly recognize its devices, these devices must be attached in a specific order.
Plug in your DSL modem's power cord.
There is usually no power button on a modem.
Simply plugging in its electrical cable will turn it on.
Give your DSL modem a couple minutes to re-establish its connection to AT&T's network before taking any further action.
Plug in your D-Link router's power cord.
Like the DSL modem, this router will probably not have a power switch; simply plug in the power cable, and it turns on.
Let the D-Link router sit for a couple minutes while it establishes its connection to the DSL modem and AT&T's network.
Physically attach your computer to the router with an Ethernet cable.
Even if the router and modem are wireless, a physical connection must be established to properly configure the router.
If this is not a wireless network, then your setup procedure is essentially complete.
To access a D-Link router on your network, open an Internet browser and navigate to the 192.168.0.1 address.
This will bring you to your D-Link router's interface.
The default User Name is "admin" (without the quotes), and there is no password.
Enter the User Name and click the "Log In" button. This will bring you to the Setup window.
Refer to your D-Link router's documentation for changing the default password (highly recommended) and forwarding ports.
If this is a wireless network, you have a couple further steps.
First, change your network's SSID (Service Set Identifier) title, so that you can recognize it when other wireless networks are nearby.
Also, choose your wireless encryption and passphrase. WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2) is a solid option.
Specific instructions depend on your model of D-Link router; so refer to your documentation (which can usually be found at the manufacturer's website if you do not have it on hand).
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer.
Your new wireless network should be visible with your computer's wireless adapter.
Windows and OS X will notify you of networks in range when your adapter is active.
Connect to the one with your SSID, and enter the passphrase.

Wireless Network D-Link
If you have a D-link wireless network, your computer is susceptible to outside intruders unless you take preventive measures to prevent intrusion.
There are some important settings that you need to change within your D-link control panel to add an extra measure of security.
By changing these settings, the intruders will have no other choice but to choose another computer to attack.

Type the router IP address, "192.168.0.1", into your Internet browser.
Press "Enter" on your keyboard.
Enter your username and password to log into the D-link configuration panel.
By default, the username is "Admin" with a blank password field.
To prevent outsiders from being able to access your D-link router's configuration panel, change the username and password to something more secure.
This can be done by selecting "Tools" from the menu and selecting "Admin."
Select "Administration Settings" and enter your new username and password.
Save your changes by clicking "Apply."

Enter the IP addresses for the computers you want to give access to your router.
You can do this by clicking the "DHCP" link underneath the "Home" tab. Click "Apply" to save the IP addresses.
Select the "Wireless" link underneath the "Home" tab.
Enter a name in the "SSID" field to identify your wireless network.

Choose "WPA" for your "Security" option.
WPA will provide the highest level of security for your wireless network. Create a WPA password to access your wireless network.
For maximum security, enter a combination of numbers, letters, and symbols.
Store your password in a safe place in case you ever forget it.
Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Install a software firewall program on your computer to add an additional measure of security for your wireless network.
A few of the popular firewall programs available are Norton Antivirus, McAfee and Zone Alarm.

How do i set up secured network?

set-secured-wireless-network-netgear-800x800.jpg Set up a Secured Wireless Network on Netgear Photo is inappropriate for this article Submit

A wireless network is comprised of a wireless router, a computer (or other wireless-enabled devices), a high-speed modem, and a subscription to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Netgear is a popular manufacturer of wireless networking hardware that allows users to set up a secured wireless network. In order to prevent unauthorized users from logging onto your wireless network to gain access the Internet, and in order to protect the data you transmit and receive online, you should change your wireless router's security settings to create a secured wireless network.

1 Install the router. To install a Netgear wireless router, use an Ethernet cable to connect the router to the cable/DSL modem and use another Ethernet cable to connect the router to your computer. Make sure all of these devices are powered off as you connect them. Once connected, turn on the cable/DSL modem, the router, then the computer, in that order. Allow at least two minutes to pass after turning on each device to give the devices time to recognize one another

2 Log in to the router. Open a web browser and type in the router's address to load the router's settings page. The router's address can be found in the user guide or setup CD that came with your router, or you can download a user guide from Netgear's technical support page (see Resources). Most Netgear routers use one of the following addresses: http://192.168.1.1; http://www.routerlogin.net; or http://www.routerlogin.com. Press "Enter" or click "Go" in your web browser after you have entered the address.

3 Enter the router's username and password. A prompt will appear on the screen when you enter your router's address, requiring you to enter a username and password before you can access the router's settings page. The default username for Netgear routers is "username" and the password is "password." Because the textboxes are case-sensitive, you must enter both of these using all lowercase letters. Press "Enter" to log in to the router and begin changing its security settings.

4 Open the security settings menu. The router's home page has multiple links for changing settings. Find and click the "Security Settings" link to change the router's security settings.

5 Change the SSID, choose an encryption setting and create a password. The default name (or "SSID") of your wireless network will be "NETGEAR." Enter a new, memorable name for your wireless network to help detract would-be hackers from trying to access your router, as most novice computer users with unsecure networks do not know how to change the default network name or institute any other security features. Newer Netgear routers offer WPA or WPA-PSK encryption to secure your network, both of which provide high levels of security. Select either of these. encryption types and create a unique password. This will require all users to enter the password before they can log in to your wireless network. It is important that you create a complex password that has several characters, including numbers. Once you have created a password, click "Confirm Password" to save it. To exit the security settings menu and log off of the router, click "Save" or "Apply" to save the changes you made, then click "Logout" to exit the route

How to set a password?

  • Access the router's default configuration address through your Web browser by entering this address: http://192.168.1.1 (see Resources). Do not enter a user name. Enter "admin" for the password. That process works for all new Linksys routers. If you have changed the user name or password in the past, use the user name and password that you created.

  • 2

When the configuration screen opens, click on the "Wireless" tab and select "Wireless Security" to view the router's current security password. The "Security Mode" field will say "Disabled" if you do not have a password to secure your network.

  • 3

Select the appropriate encryption type from the "Security Mode" drop-down menu. Linksys routers offer WEP and WPA encryption. WPA encryption allows you to use a single password to access the network. WEP encryption creates 10- or 26-character keys that act as your password. Some of your wireless devices may only utilize a certain type of encryption. Determine which protocol is best for your network.

  • 4

Enter a password that will be required to access the network. For WPA encryption, you can write your own password. For WEP encryption, click the "Generate" button to create passwords that can be used to access the network. Write down your passwords and keep them in a secure location.

  • 5

Click "Save Settings" to confirm your changes. Your network will now be secured and will require a password for access.

  • 6

Click the "Administration" tab to create a password to access the router configuration page itself. Be sure to change the password from the default "admin." Reenter the password for confirmation in the next field. Click "Save Settings" to confirm your new password.

How to secure my internet connection via smc router

If you plan to have a wireless network, you should set it up so that only people you choose can access it. Here are a few options for wireless network security.

    Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
WEP is a widely used network security method. When you enable WEP, you set up a network security key. This key encrypts the information that one computer sends to another computer across your network. The receiving computer needs the key to decode the information so that it's difficult for someone on another computer to get onto your network and access files without your permission.

    Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)
WPA was created to improve the security of WEP. Like WEP, WPA encrypts information, but it also checks to make sure that the network security key has not been modified. WPA also authenticates users to help ensure that only authorized people can access the network. If your networking hardware works with both WEP and WPA security, we recommend that you use WPA.

There are two types of WPA authentication: WPA and WPA2. WPA is designed to work with all wireless network adapters, but it might not work with older routers or access points. WPA2 is more secure than WPA, but it will not work with some older network adapters. WPA is designed to be used with an 802.1X authentication server, which distributes different keys to each user. This is referred to as WPA-Enterprise or WPA2-Enterprise. It can also be used in a pre-shared key (PSK) mode, where every user is given the same passphrase. This is referred to as WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal.

    802.1X authentication
802.1X authentication can help enhance security for 802.11 wireless networks and wired Ethernet networks. 802.1X uses an authentication server to validate users and provide network access. On wireless networks, 802.1X can work with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) keys. This type of authentication is typically used when connecting to a workplace network.

IF THIS ALL DOSEN'T WORK TRY THE FOLLOWING:

    Wireless network security recommendations
If you have a wireless network, there are some additional security precautions that you should take.

    Use a network security key
If you have a wireless network, you should set up a network security key, which turns on encryption. With encryption, people can't connect to your network without the security key. Also, any information that is sent across your network is encrypted so that only computers that have the key to decrypt the information can read it. This can help avert attempts to access your network and files without your permission. Common wireless network encryption methods are Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WPA-2.

Change the default administrator name and password on your router or access point
If you have a router or access point, you probably used a default name and password to set up the equipment. Most manufacturers use the same default name and password for all of their equipment, which someone could use to access your router or access point without you knowing it. To avoid that risk, change the default administrator user name and password for your router. Check the information that came with your device for instructions about how to change the name and password.

    Change the default SSID
Routers and access points use a wireless network name called a service set identifier (SSID). Most manufacturers use the same SSID for all of their routers and access points. We recommend that you change the default SSID to keep your wireless network from overlapping with other wireless networks that might be using the default SSID. It makes it easier for you to identify which wireless network is yours, if there is more than one nearby, because the SSID is typically shown in the list of available networks. Check the information that came with your device for instructions about how to change the default SSID.

Position your router or access point carefully
Wireless signals can transmit a few hundred feet, so the signal from your network could be broadcast outside of your home. You can help limit the area that your wireless signal reaches by positioning your router or access point close to the center of your home rather than near an outside wall or window.
