Question about Home

1 Answer

I have a foot actuated stopper in my bath tub. I removed it to clean the drain out. Since I had it out, I figured I would take the stopper itself apart and clean it. I thought I was being careful to notice how it was together but not careful enough lol. Anyway, there is only a few parts. Two springs and a couple of of plastic pieces. For the life of me I can't figure it out. Maybe I did put it together right and it just don't work now.

It does not sound like it would be very expensive to replace.
I would get a new one.

How do I take the drain plug off so I can clean it out?

If the drain is one like this

You can remove it by unscrewing the cap anticlockwise. You may need vise-grips. Pad the jaws with masking tape.

If it is one like this

You must remove the center screw and strainer. In extreme cases you may need to remove and replace the drain flange with a special wrench

http://images.meredith.com/diy/images/2009/02/p_SCP_167_08.jpg

In some locations there is no center screw to the strainer, which is all one piece with the flange. These cannot usually be removed without access to the big nut on the underside of the tub

How to remove bath tub pop-up stoppers

Put the lever in the open position so that you can grab the stopper. After you get a grip on it, put the lever in the closed position and the drain plug and rocker assembly will pull out in a horizontal direction.

I can not close my bath tub drain. the plunger is all internal and wont come out either. I tried a coat hanger to push it down. no go.

on most tubs the stopper is made to come out! does the stopper have 2 screws at the stopper lever. if it does just remove these screws and pull the stopper out slowly. when putting in a new one. have the same length as the old one, then slide it back in the drain fairly slow until it goes all the way in. replace screws and try it! good-day!

Toe tap stoppers remove by just gripping the stopper and unscrewing it. Once the stopper has been removed the hair will be usually caught on the crossbar underneath the stopper where it can be removed with needlenose pliers.
Spring type stoppers for drains are just about as notorious for being hair catchers. Once again there is nothing to stop the hair from leaving the tub.

Removing bath drain

There are two types of tub drain stoppers for the delta brand - lift & turn and toe tap.

Lift and Turn:
The lift & turn stopper for the bathtub unscrews counterclockwise while in the full up position.

Toe Tap:
The toe tap stopper does also but if the cap may unscrew from it before the entire stopper comes out. In that case, there is a nut that is now exposed and can be accessed to unscrew the assembly.

If either of these is "spinning" without unscrewing, the threads are stripped and you would need to exert upward pressure while unscrewing in hopes of uncoupling this from the bath waste. If that doesn't work you would have to unscrew the bath waste flange from the drain pipe.
This will require access under the tub. I hope this answer the question for you. Thank you for using FIXYA. Jeff

My 2000 kohler tub drain leaks. The drain itself

Need clarification....the drain leaks to the ceiling below, or it doesn't hold water? If it doesn't hold water, no need to replace the ring. Those can be adjusted. Simply pull up on on the lever and screw it in clockwise. This will lower the stop and hold the water. If it actually leaks below, unscrew said stopper, grab a pair of needle nose pliers and place them in the drain (to grab the strainer) and use another pair to loosen. Once off, clean around drain and clean strainer, apply plumbers putty to the strainer, apply pipe "dope" (thread sealant) to the threads and tighten back in. Good luck!

You will have to change out the waste and overflow. This is not a hard job, unscrew drain from tub, remove overflow plate and disconnect from p-trap. Go to local home improvement store and buy a new waste and overflow kit, many to choose from. Reinstall .

American standard bath drain problem

The stoper assembly has linkage and a plumb bob aparatus

Step 1 remove the 2 screws that hold the chrome overflow cover,

Step 2 you will see a wire connected to the up and sown handle

Step 3 you should be able to fish out the linkage which will have a bumb bob attached
mae sure this is all connected if not reattach if you do not see the blumb bob reach your fingers in and grab the wire

Step 4 inspect the linkage the first link is about 3 inches from chrome cove, second is about 8 inches down and final is at the bob itself bob is pointed and slides in by gravity
If this all looks ok then fish it down , put chrome cover on and move lever up and down ( you should see the stopper mve up and down

Step 5 If stopper is not in just insrt in drain hole and move the lver flow lever up and down and drain should work sometimes the stoper does not go up or down far enough there could be an adjustment on the linkage to reduce or increase the length of the linkage

Good Luck
