Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a 6 year old Carrier Unit and Thermostat that was new with the house. Last night the A/C jsut turned off. I looked at the Thermostat and it was blank, no power. i thought it was the fuse. It was NOT tripped but i reset anyway. Still no power to the unit or thermostat. Any thoughts?

If the thermostat is blank is very likely that the 24 volt transformer shorted. depending on the unit it might be equipped with a fuse similar to the ones found on vehicles if not transformer will need to get replaced this is located inside the air handling unit. the source of the short might be outside next to the compressor.. if the control wires(small wires going into compresor) are exposed it is possible that a pet move them, someone cut them with a grass trimer I have a 6 year old Carrier Unit and Thermostat - raypena_0.jpgrain or sprinklers cause them to short ( if exposed) first fix the wires them replace the fuse all should be fine.

I would start by installing a new thermostat because it sounds to me like it's either the thermostat or the control board and the t-stat is the less expensive of the two. I hope this helps you and thanks.

If the induction motor ain't going I would look for a blown 3 amp (purple) fuse on the control board. If that was good I would check if any of the roll out switches were tripped. If a rollout switch was tripped check or air restrictions somewhere.

The first thing I would check is to see the condensing coil is clean. Take a garden house and wash it thoroughly. If it is severely clogged you may need to remove the top and clean it with water pressure blowing from the inside out. This may stop the overheating.

nope, nope, sounds like a stuck contactor in the electrical compartment of the condenser, but there are actually several things that could cause it.

If both fans runs (inside and outside), check if the compresor runs , if does probably the unit is low in freon and needs to be recharged after the freon leak has been fixed (remember this is a seal system and it shouldn't leak), but if the compressor doesn't work , it could be the capacitor , the pressure switch (if it's low on freon ) or the compreessor itself. But befor do anything ,if you have a digital thermostat replce the batteries.

Possible Contactor Issue

Sounds like a bad fan switch in your unit. That unit has a fan board in it that is time delay on and off. Turn the fan to the on position and let it run all the time. If it keeps temp and does not shut off it is the fan realy board. The board also controls the compressor. Check that first and then the tsat. Russ

Verify 24 volts at the low voltage transformer inside the air handler. If it is OK, jump out the red/green and yellow thermostat wires. If everything comes on, replace the thermostat.

When very cold my furnace does not turn on warmer only sometimes

It sounds as though your thermostat isn't reading the temp correctly anymore. Its the only thing that tells the unit to come on and it may be short cycling because of the tstat. When the unit first comes on, its going to push the cold air out of the ducts first before the warm air and this is normal. I would replace the thermostat first because it is the cheapest part of the unit and wouldn't hurt since it is 13 years old. You will find that a new thermostat will be more accurate anyway and tend to save you some $$ on your electric bill. I hope this helps.
