Question about Weiser Lock POWERBOLT ELEC DEADBOLT

1 Answer

I have to punch code in twice for the lock to open. The first time moves the deadbolt about 1/4 inch and the 2nd time actually opens it. I've changed batteries and it hasn't corrected the problem.

Thanks for your response. Yes, it happens when the door is open as well.

You did not indicate whether the problem exists only if the door is closed, or also if it operates in the same manner when the door is open. If it is only a problem when the door is closed, then you probably have a misalignment between the lock and the strike mounted in the door frame.

Here is a link to the installation instructions for the Powerbolt. It is a PDF file, requiring Adobe Reader or similar is installed on your computer:

http://www.weiserlock.com/PDFs/install_sheets/pb_eng_install.pdf

If the problem is not due to a misalignment, then I suggest that you contact Weiser Customer Service:

They have toll-free assistance numbers.

Good luck!

Deadbolt barely moves in weiser lock

I assume that you get the same results whether you operate the lock with the door open or the door closed. That is, that you've already ruled out a bind between the closed door and the door jamb.
I'd recommend changing the battery first of all. At this time of year, cold weather can have a negative effect on your battery power.
If you've already changed the battery and are still having the problem, you should pursue having the lock covered under warranty. Weiser has a lifetime warranty covering the mechanical operation (and finish) of their locks. Before they cover it under warranty, they are going to ask you the same questions about battery and binding that I've already mentioned.
To change the battery for your lock, go to this web page:

http://www.weiserlock.com/Support/Faq/50160000000HhhZAAS.aspx

Or, alternately, this page for the Kwikset version, which is identical, if you have trouble loading the first page:

http://www.kwikset.com/Customer-Support/Product-FAQs/Faq/50160000000HhhEAAS.aspx

Notice that the above are of the " .PDF" file type. That means that you need to have Adobe Reader or similar installed on your computer to view it. So if you are unable to view the file, download (for free) and install Adobe Reader first. You can get it here:

http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Finally, the warranty information link:

http://www.weiserlock.com/CustomerService/WarrantyInfo/Powerbolt.aspx

Review it, and then follow the "Support Contact" link on that page. It's always best to contact them by phone and seek their assistance.

Good luck--and please provide feedback if this helps!

Upon returning home to find my powerbolt 1000 had only partially locked, I hit the lock button again to reset the lock. It then proceeded to beep for 10 seconds and then allow nothing for a minute. I then...

I suggest changing the batteries and reprogramming the lock.
Under normal circumstances you do not need to reprogram the lock after changing batteries, but I would do it anyway. It seems to be acting like it doesn't recognize your code.
Also, you should check the alignment of the door lock to the door frame strike plate, using the manual turnlock(T-turn) to check it. If the door is misaligned, make necessary adjustment to deadbolt strike location and/or hole in door jamb to allow the deadbolt latch to retract and extend freely.
Test your lock after programming for proper operation with the door open so that you can watch it cycle.

Here is a link to the on-line installation and programming instructions:

Notice that the above is a .pdf filetype. That means that you need to have Adobe Reader or similar installed on your computer to view it. So if you are unable to view the file, download (for free) and install Adobe Reader first. You can get it here:

If, after the battery change and reprogramming you lock is still not working properly, it's time to call Kwikset Customer Service and let them help you, since new parts may be in order.

One final note: I recently helped someone else with a Powerbolt that would not fully extend and retract--he thought it was an electronic problem at first. Then he removed the deadbolt assembly and found, in his words, "the deadbolt is ensconced with a plastic sleeve when it retracts into the latch housing. The sleeve is shattered and most likely to be the cause of its malfunction." Something else to look at!

Good luck--and please provide feedback if this helps!

I have to punch in the code twice to retract the bolt, new batteries installed, no change!

Be sure the bolt is able to move freely. After the first try, does the lock try to move the bolt?
If it behaves like the wrong code was entered, the keypad might be part of the problem.

I have a kwikset deadbolt model 898 keyless entry.i need to change pin number on keypad outside

I had the same question as my son installed the lock. Instructions should be printed on the cover you remove (inside the house). They need to make removing that cover MUCH easier, I'm always afraid I'll break it. Anyway, you press the button once for the first number. To enter a "guest" code, press the button twice then enter the 2nd code in the keypad and press the lock button. Now try both main # and guest #, both should open ttthe lock.

When i try to lock or open with key pad it will make the sound like its closing but the bolt does not move. can only lock and open with key.

The deadbolt may very free inside the deadbolt hole... This system is low torque and a over torque clutch may slip if the dead bolt it's not completely free inside the deadbolt hole... Also, if you try to open the door before to unlock it, you may block the deadbolt... take care to unlock the door before open it. to be sure that the dead lock is ok, you can turn the manual knob and be sure is turning very very easily.

Also are you no that POWERBOLT is a 3 codes memory? go to that link to see more info about that : http://www.fixya.com/support/t8006865-not_overwrite_old_codes_just_keeps

Bolt doesn't open all the way

You should replace your batteries as the motor that moved the deadbolt does not have enough power to move it with weak batteries. If that fails make sure the deadbolt moves freely when the lock is removed as the mis-aligned mounting will cause excessive force be exerted to move the deadbolt. Remove, lubricate with a dry silicone or graphite lubricant and reinstall. The mounting bolts may have loosened up, and now it is not perfectly lined up. More likely is some corrossion or wear in the throw mechanism.

Make sure that the tang from the lock side actually engage the mechanism in other side of the door. If the tang is too short or not engaged the lock will not work. Also check that the two screws connecting the lock to the other side is actually tight.
