People often feel panic when I see this. If I format the drive, will I lose all my data? If not, how could I get access to my files?

Try "Kernel for FAT and NTFS" data recovery software to recover data, You can get it from http://www.windowsdatarecovery.com/ and follow the steps :
1. Get the HDD out of the external casing.
2. Connect the HDD to the Other system as External drive
3. Then run data recovery software on it will take time for the scan to be completed.
4. After scan completed u got d list of files ready to be recovered
5. Recover the files you want to recover.

Such external hard disk not formatted error problems often happen due to some virus-infection issue, hard disk unsupported file system issue, hard disk logical damage and more. Hope your external drive state is not too bad.

Hard Disc Data Recovery is not an easy job I can suggest you to visit a professional before its too late, don't experiment on the HDD and get it to an expert.

You had better backup the data before recovery. however, If you can not backup your data, you have to rely on data recovery program to get back formatted data after formation. Use Card Data Recovery, it can recover data from formatted WD hard drive.
