Don't be panic. you can try some data recovery software. You can see
http://download.cnet.com/Asoftech-Data-Recovery/3000-2248_4-75328850.html?part=dl-75328850&subj=dl&tag=button
It tells the steps how to perform data recovery.

If above does not work, you may have to format the external hard drive (use quick format), and then use above mentioned software to scan again the external hard drive and recover your files.

People often feel panic when I see this. If I format the drive, will I lose all my data? If not, how could I get access to my files?

My take is that you may have to format the drive and then use recovery software to recover your files.

Here's some information about file recovery, think you need to take a look, very useful

Hi there,
You can first retrieve your data from it by using a data recovery program.I have succeed to recover data from formatted external hard drive with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data you accidentally formatted. You can download a trial version of it and scan your hard drive for free to check out whether your data can be recovered.http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm
Then you can format it to check out whether it can be recovered.Luck!

Such external hard disk not formatted error problems often happen due to some virus-infection issue, hard disk unsupported file system issue, hard disk logical damage and more. Hope your external drive state is not too bad.
And now, in order to rescue your not formatted USB hard disk files, you'd better stop doing anything else to this drive and merely plunge it to your PC. And then, let external drive data recovery software to scan it deeply.
And, at last, wait and see whether all your preferable drive information is still recoverable.

Have you tried this external hard drive on another computer? Also get the same not formatted error?
OK! If so, your external drive must have some drive errors or problems.
To take your desired drive stuffs, firstly, do not format this drive and also do not add anything new on this drive to cause farther drive data loss.
Secondly, plunge it to your computer with its USB cable and use drive data recovery software to take desired data back as much as possible.

Hey, never panic! Your inaccessible drive information is really possible to be restored with data recovery software.
So, do not format this drive and also place no new stuffs on this drive in case of farther data loss.
And then, pay much attention to choose proper data recovery software that often can scan your drive deeply and rescue found files back as many as possible, like: http://freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/02/external-hard-disk-format-recovery.html
No matter what happens again, always prepare drive data backups well.

You had better backup the data before recovery. however, If you can not backup your data, you have to rely on data recovery program to get back formatted data after formation. Use Card Data Recovery, it can recover data from formatted WD hard drive.

OK! I have ever followed a video tutorial to resolve solve such hard drive data loss problems from here:

You can also check it and follow its steps to see whether all your files could be restored successfully.

Is it an external HDD or internal?

In either case if it is formatted you can recover data by softwares like Recuva and Recover my files.

The files recovered are not in the same organized manner nor with same name

It is better if you try to plug it in to a different system/laptop

Files on a flash drive can be corrupted if it is not removed from the USB port properly.
Before removing the flash drive click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon and then click on the flash drive you want to remove and then remove the flash drive when the computer message says it is Safe to remove.
To restore the flash drive you need to format the flash drive, but you will lose the data stored on the flash drive.

Do not format the drive. Try some photo recovery software to rescue the files on your digital memory card, here are some for your options.

Photo Recovery (for Windows)
Photo Recovery for Mac

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

Pc suddenly requires my western digital to be formatted

The drive is likely failing; Windows is unable to located a boot record for the drive and therefore it wants to format it in order to continue; trying it on a 2nd pc confirms this.
It may be possible to use a utility such as Data Doctor's Data Recovery to recover the data but it's going to cost some $$.
You can check out the utility at http://www.software.com/view/8432/0/data-doctor-windows-data-recovery-software
I've used this in the past to recover data from drives that were overwritten; and to undelete files that were lost when someone accidently deleted a user's windows profile.
Hope this helps! good luck!
