There are pre-defined calibration patterns available for download at this site. All you need to do is to download them and follow the instructions to get them onto your bluray
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=948496
If you are unable to comprehend any part of it let me know and I will break it down for you. Just wanted to avoid re-typing the whole thing thats all. I am sure that your bluray supports AVC/HD but I am not sure about the others.

    1080p Display Mode
When the resolution is set to 1080p, select
[24Hz] for smooth presentation of fi lm material
    (1080p/24 Hz) with a HDMI-equipped display
    compatible with 1080p/24 Hz input
    Resolution
Sets the output resolution of the Component
and HDMI video signal. Refer to page 17 and
97 for details about the resolution setting
    [1080p]
Outputs 1080 lines of progressive video
    [1080i]
Outputs 1080 lines of interlaced video
    [720p]
Outputs 720 lines of progressive video
    [480p]
Outputs 480 lines of progressive video
    [480i]
Outputs 480 lines of interlaced video
All these settings will depend to the compactability of the TV set you connectes with. You can get best effect with an HDMI connection, if it is availabe with your TV. If not a Coaxial also will do the same. Component video will be compactabe to most of the TVs. Picture settings, ie, colour, contrast, brightness, hue and sharpness depend on individual taste. OK.

Actually brightness, contrast settings depends on the ambient light of the room where the TV is placed and viewed. In common a contrast of 65 to 77% and a brightness of 30 to 55% is advisable. Thie will depend on the brightness and contrast level set with the TV too. On Tv, set the brighness and contrast to an extent to get a pure black/white picture, well defined black, grey and white levels, and apply sufficiant colour to this B/W picture later to get a picture you prefers. OK.

The optical players, whatever their type or model, don't need user calibrations - this is done automatically in the optical head by the suspension system of the lens.
If your player can't recognize disks then they are either in a format that your player can't support (like, in your case, the 3D ones) or the optical head is defective. If it's the latter the only way to fix it is by replacing the optical unit as a whole - heads aren't sold as parts.
You can get a new optical unit from a dealer (you will have to take it to their repair shop) or you can adapt yourself a pc desktop unit - a SATA BR player.

There are just 2 picture settings on the player, and they depend just on what kind of a tv you have:
1 - the format of the image - 4:3 or 16:9 : if you have a wide tv, modern LCD or plasma, select 16:9
2 - the resolution of the image - 480i (standard), 720i or p (HD Ready tv) and 1080i or p (Full HD): select the one that corresponds to the type of tv you have. If you aren't sure how good the Full HD from your tv is select 1080i, if the tv is top of the line select 1080p

  • Azrael SRL May 29, 2011

There aren't any other settings, The player always delivers the best image it can, whatever the format or resolution of the image. If the image is not perfect then the fault is in the tv, not the LG player.

  • Azrael SRL May 29, 2011

You still don't get it - those settings are done in the tv, they do not exist in your player. These settings are specific to that tv and the room in which it sits.

I had the exact same problem with my BD390 and another LG home theater system, both with the current firmware updates. I noticed others have posted this issue on various sites as well. I called LG and the guy I spoke with seems to have been coached pretty well on the scenes where this problem is occuring since he could sight the exact scenes that were giving me the problem. He claimed the blu ray probably isn't exactly 1080i or 1080p and that the player is probably having problems processing the resolution so I should lower it to 720p. This didn't fix the problem and didn't help explain why my blu ray player which plays plenty of other high resolution movies only has a problem with this movie. I think a firmware update is needed to fix the issue but I'm not holding my breath that LG will be proactive in getting that out soon.

Try disabling BD-Live.
On the LG BD390 go to the Home screen then select the following:
Settings-->Network-->BD-Live Connection
You have three options: Permitted, Partially Permitted (default), and Prohibited.
Change the setting to Prohibited.
Now reload the disk and try again.
If that doesn't work try clearing the BD Storage (memory about the disks you play).
Again from the Home screen:
Settings-->Others-->BD Storage Clear
I think changing the BD-Live setting will stop the problem you're experiencing. If that works, you could also try changing the setting to Permitted.
I am experiencing issues with some of the very latest Blu-Ray disks, such as Avatar and Date Night. I don't have enough experience to be sure yet, but so far the evidence points to a new setting or standard in the disk industry that does not play well with the Partially Permitted default setting on the LG BD390 and a few other Blu-Ray players.
I hope this helps. Good luck.
