The back of your watch is attached in one of two ways. Look at the watch back. If it's smooth all around the circumference of the back, you have a snap-fit back. If, however, you see little notches cut into the edges--if they were extended, it would make the back look like a pizza that's been cut into slices--then you have a back that screws on and off. Pictures I've seen of your specific watch suggest to me that you have a snap-fit case back, though I'll include instructions about a screw-on back just in case I'm wrong.

A snap-fit case back often has a small (very small) raised section at one spot of the rim; this is so you can insert a tool called a case knife and pop the back off. If you don't see that small raised section, you'll need to wiggle the blade of your case knife under the edge and gently apply leverage from there--it's usually easiest by one of the watch lugs, as opposed to near the watch crown. If you don't have a case knife, you can often use a thin (but tough!) knife blade to do the same thing. Remember, though, that applying this much force through a knife blade can distort or take a chunk out of your edge, so be prepared to sacrifice a knife or be prepared to re-sharpen it after this exercise. A screwdriver does not work very well; the blades are typically too narrow to provide good leverage without distorting the case back, and they may even cutt a gouge into the watch body. Avoid using them for this purpose. To increase the water resistance of watches, modern snap-fit case backs are often very tightly fitted--they can be tough to get off, but they're even tougher to push back into position. I would not be surprised if you would need a jeweler's press to get the back of this watch back into position.

If, on the other hand, you have a case back with notches in it, you will need to unscrew the back of the watch. You'll need a special wrench to do this. There are lots of makers and models from a basic $5 "watch crab" to a $100 workbench-mounted device that works on all kinds of watches, including Rolexes. Again, because screw backs are usually tightly fastened to increase water resistance, simply using a pair of needle-nose pliers in the ridges probably won't work. Nor will using a screwdriver in one notch--these backs are designed to move when equal pressure is applied around the edges, and applying force in one area only locks things up. Under no circumstances try to pry off the back if you have a screw back -- this will damage the threads, and you'll probably never be able to get the watch back together again.

You can find case knives and case wrenches at many jewelry supply stores, mail order supply houses like Otto Frei ( will take you right to the watch repair tools), and on eBay. However, if you're near a Harbor Freight store, they sell a "watch battery changing kit" and jeweler's press for an extremely reasonable price. These aren't the ultra-high quality tools that a professional jeweler would use, but they'll be perfectly fine for changing the occasional battery for many years. I've probably closed 100+ watches using the inexpensive press I got from there.

I got it as gift, but I can not open the panther now.

You have to pull on the back of the bracelet in the middle. You feel like you are going to break it but you won't. Pantheres are especially hard to open because you can't tell where the links go together. Try pulling on one side of the middle part then the other, one side is usually the weaker one then once that one opens, you can put your fingernail under the other side and pull it open. It's crazy how they don't have a button or something to open them like other watches. You can do it!

How do I open the case of a 1968 automatic, ambassador Bulova watch? It appears that there is no way to open the back.

Pull out the crown. Now try to pull out it more, just don't do too hard. If the stem does not come out, there is the way you can open the watch - if it does not, then you have a monoblock case and it can be opened by the special pump only. In case if you can not pull the stem out, take an eyeglass and examine case back all the way around the case. You have to see the tiny groove. This is the place where to insert the openers blade and pry it .

Can;t open back of watchto find date it was made do i need special tool or some thing else can be used

You definitely need special Rolex case back opener. Without it your watch will be locked forever. Rolex cases are so tight, that even when special opener is used, you will need quite strong arms to open it. Rolex case openers sometimes sells on ebay, but they are never cheap.

Cannot open clasp prestige replica rolex

1)Unscrew the crown until it pops out, the same way you would unscrew the crown to change the time on the watch.
2)Place the watch case opener in the notches around the outside of the back of the watch case. You have to use a watch case opener made for Rolex watches to open the watch. Once the case opener is in place, twist it and the back will pop open.
3)Use a mini screwdriver to loosen a tiny screw on the inside of the watch located near the stem. You do not need to unscrew fully--only loosen it.
4)Pull the crown straight out. The crown and stem should come out easily.
To open the back of the watch
1)Purchase a Rolex watch back opener set, if you do not already have one. This set is able to open and close any size of Rolex case.
2)Match the size of your Rolex case with the same size of grooved metal die from the tool set.
3)Put the metal die on the grooves on the back of the watch case.
4)Turn the die to remove the case.
5)Remove the rubber gasket.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Pocket watch stem is broken.

To open the front, try a toothpick in the hole. You will need to get the stem replaced.

To open the back:
Flip the watch over and look around the edge. There will be small slots. A thin blade like a pocket knife will open the back cover. Carefully, put the knife blade into the slot and twist it open. There isn't much user serviceable stuff inside.

I can not open rolex bracelet

Sometimes Rolex bracelet clasps are very tight and this only shows the quality of the watch.
Don't be afraid to pull the clasp hard enough to open it- nothing will brake as Rolex is designed for quite hard use.
If you can't do it by hand, try to use flat butter knife end as a lever.
