Cannot get to boot screen

Usually you have to press a key to get it to boot from the disk if it detects a bootable hard drive. So you may just have to watch for a very briekf/quick message and then hit a key to boot from the cd. Had a Toshiba do this to me and I would swear it was less than a 1/4 second for the boot to cd option before it tried to boot from the hd.

If you put the had drive as the last thing it looks for it might help. You should be able to pick from cd, floppy and network card to boot from. On some models you can actually ignore the hard drive when looking for something to boot from.

Past this point you could try booting from a USB stick. You can load the contents of the install cd onto one and there are utilities to help make the stick bootable.

If you can't get anything to behave you may need to yank out the drive and format it on another machine. There are adapters worth maybe $4 that will let you put the drive onto a desktop cable and then format it using that machine. Then stick it back in and install
using the cd.

Dell Inspiron 1420 will no longer boot

you need to enter setup by tapping one of the f keys or the delete key. i'm not sure which it is for this model. when you enter the bios setup change the boot order to boot to the dvd first. hit f10 and save the change then reboot with your install disk in the drive. it should start installing.

Won't POST or power up

strip it down further to find out the issue. Disconnect all HDs all CD ROMs and remove the memory. Leave the bare minium. Screen and board and see if it boots. If it boots add a memory stick then on next boot if its good add a HD and so on

Philips sa3245/37 takes 2 minutes to boot- goes into update mode on power up even if power up/power down then repower up???

If you have just added a lot of songs, which usually happens on your first load, then 2 minute bootup/updating or longer is normal - the more songs you add in a sitting, the longer it will take to boot up.

Problem with boot

is your jumper setting in your cd drive correct? during boot up, does your computer detects your cd rom drives? cd rom drives must be in slave. Check also your ide cable, be sure its not connected reverse.
