You did not post any information about the motor. There is a specific gap between the magneto and the flywheel and also the flywheel has a woodruff key to make sure the timing is correct. Check for spark, check gap on magneto and check magneto if you don't have spark.

the mesh cover should have screws in it or the center cup holds it in place. youll have to remove center nut or bolt to get flywheel off

The magneto is probably where the problem is. You'll need to pull the cover off of the motor and check the gap between the magneto and the flywheel. If the bolts holding the magneto have vibrated loose, the gap between the magneto and the flywheel will be incorrect. While you have the motor cover off, check the wiring to make sure you don't have a short in your ignition wiring and clean the air filter. I don't remember what the gap is between the flywheel and magneto, but .010 In. sounds familiar. Both legs of the magneto should be the same distance from the flywheel and they must not touch the flywheel at any point. I have used a matchbook cover between the flywheel and magneto while I tightened the magneto retention screws and it worked.

Indications that the motor is out of time: jerks the rope out of your hand when trying to start, pops out the carb, runs but has no power and sounds 'off'.
When assembling the motor a dot on the cam gear and a dot on the crank gear need to be lined up.
If the motor has run correctly before the problem and has not been disassembled then the problem is likely external.
There are no actual timing adjustments. The flywheel key holds the flywheel in the correct position. If it is sheared or partially sheared the timing will be off. Check the flywheel key by removing the flywheel and visually inspecting the flywheel key; replace if not 100%. On assembly be sure the flywheel nut is tight or it will shear the key (again), then set the armature air gap ( gap between ignition module and flywheel magnet) to .020
On older motors the points gap can affect timing also but I dont believe your model has points. The points gap is also .020

Have you also changed the spark plug too. The ignition circuit is pretty simple, from the battery, the Coil is energized, the "points" or equivalent, through the "Distributor" or equivalent, and onto the Spark Plug. So it is a simple matter to work along the path, proving the "Integrity" at each, point by testing. IF it still doesn't fire after ensuring all Leads are OK, the Spark Plugs are proven OK, the Cables, the Points, & Distributor, . IT is either that or the Ignition Timing is OFF. Please check all those points.

Need to know flywheel gap18 horse briggs


The flywheel gap on most Briggs motors is between 25 and 35 thou. the easiest way I have found to set them is if you have a pack of paper matces tear off the cover of the matches and the cardboard the cover is made out of is a perfect dimmnsion to set flywheel gaps and points and being cardboard it does not get effected by the magnets on the flywheel. 20 Thousands will work. If it does not, the you have other issues.
