Hi,

Try performing a Manual PC Tune-up first. Then, update your video adapter driver. If the problem persists, download and install a free virus removal program such as Malwarebytes. Run it, and scan your computer by choosing "Perform full scan" options. Click on "Scan" button. You may choose "Perform quick scan" for these are your free options. The instructions are straight forward on the next pages. Remove/Delete all infected files then Malwarebytes should be asking you to restart your computer. The computer should perform much better now. If problem still persists, RAM or memory upgrade may resolve the issue.

I hope this works for you. Kindly reply/comment for further assistance. Good Luck!

Here is a routine I compiled over the years on how to optimize a PC:

0. Ensure the Hard Disc Drive is not damaged or faulty - Run CheckDisk:
a. Start> Computer >select C Drive>Right Click C Drive>select "Properties">"Tools" > click "Check Now"> Select both boxes and click "Start".
b. This can take a long time, so let it complete (may take all night or longer. Be patient.)

1. Ensure your PC has as much memory (RAM) as possible.
a. Go to Start > Right Click "Computer" > Properties
b. This will list the processor type and speed as well as how much RAM is installed.
c. Search your PC's name and model # followed by "memory" to see what kind of memory you need and how much RAM your PC will support.
d. Get the maximum amount of memory your computer can hold and install it (you can search for some videos on how to do this).

2. Ensure the PC is protected.
Solution - Update existing Anti-Malware software or install if there are none.
a. Open the Anti-Virus program and ensure it is up to date.
b. Open the Anti-Spyware program and ensure it is up to date
c. If no Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware, get good programs (MalWare Bytes is a good, free anti malware program -- see link below).
d. If getting another AV program, remove the old one before installing the replacement one (see link below for AVG)

3. Remove Malware from your PC - Run the Antivrus and then the Antispyware scans (can take a while if never done. Be patient):
a. Scan the whole system with the Anti-Virus & handle whatever found;
b. Scan the whole system with the Anti-Spyware & handle whatever found;

4. Next, ensure the Registry is clean and the disk's clutter is also cleaned out with a good, relaible registry cleaner.
a. Check to see if there is a registry cleaner already on the system;
b. if none, get CCleaner at the site below
c. Run the Registry cleaner till it finds and corrects all errors
d. Run the "File Cleaner" to analyze the disk and see what it finds to delete and then delete the files that are not needed (most of the files it finds are unneeded, but look through the categories to be safe).

Note: Be careful with Registry Cleaners as there are many around and new ones come up all the time and some reportedly cause more damage than they help. Use a time-tested reliable one. CCleaner is one of the originals and is proven.

5. Now defragment the drive using a good third party program that will defrag your drive and keep it defragmented.

Fragmentation is basically broken-up pieces of files and free space randomly scattered all over your disk. The disk has to work a lot harder to save files in pieces and then to find them again and this really slows your computer down. It also wears out your disk, as the more the disk is used, the faster it wears out.

Defragmenting finds all the pieces of your files and puts them together, saving time.

Windows has a built-in defrag tool but it is very slow and you cannot use the PC while it is running (some users complain that it did not completely defrag their disks despite running all night).

a. Below is a Top 10 Reviews side-by-side comparison of the best defrag programs around. Check it out, select a program and install it.

b. The better defrag programs are automatic. The gold medal winner in the review can defrag while using the PC and it also prevents fragmentation.

You can get a free trial for the gold medal winner via the review or at the site listed below.

c. Defragment your disk drives.

Once this all is done, your PC will be in the best shape possible.

Good luck.

Hi, There are many reasons it could be slow! I would try scanning for viruses first.
you could also have a fragmented hard-drive making take longer to retrieve files. You should get a free trial of diskeeper home edition to see what i'm talking about. You can download a free trial from their website www.diskeeper.com. By the way it is also the best defragger on the market.

My laptop runs to slow why? Gene

Hi Sally.
I am assuming you are asking about Cortana.
Cortana is a voice activated personal assistant that you can use to get Weather forecasts, remind you of appointments and/or dates, send email, Etc. A lot of people find this program helpful, and a lot of people find this program annoying, ( BECAUSE IT SLOWS THEIR COMPUTER DOWN). You can disable this program two ways: 1st way, launch Cortana from the search bar on the task bar, click settings from the left pane, and under Cortana the first option I believe, slide the button switch to the off position; 2nd way, type gpedit.msc in the search box to open the editor, go to Local computer policy/ Computer configuration/ Administrative templates/ Search. Then double click the policy named allow Cortana. I believe this is it for the second way. Hope this helps. Let me know.

Sony vio computer running slow

Carla, I hate to over-simplify, but have you checked to see how many programs are running in the background? With time, lots of clutter can build up in this area- unnecessary programs eat up massive amounts of processor speed, and often there are even programs that have been uninstalled or removed that still attempt to load at start up.
First step to see what kind of mess you have to clean up, boot the laptop, then go to Start>Run & enter taskmgr - this will show a list of currently loaded programs. Then you can go into msconfig & disable selected programs from loading at start up.
If you are not sure which programs can be disabled, post a copy of the results from running taskmgr here, & I or someone else would be glad to help you sort it all out.

Hi, My laptop taking so much time to switch on and it became very slow. Please tell me the soluiton for it.

Sometimes slow booting of computers and Laptops are caused by viruses and spywares. Also, a High temperatured Processor makes a computer slow.
Here are some solutions you might want to try.
  1. If you have a installed antivirus in your computer, i suggest you update your Antivirus and then Start scanning your computer for possible viruses and spywares.
  2. If viruses and Spywares are not the problem, maybe your Processor is feeling to much heat. I suggest you use Laptop Coolers like this one. heifentrixx_11.jpg
  3. This will help you cool down you Processor and Laptop.
Hope my solution will help. Thanks for using Fixya!

My toshiba laptop Model name SATELLITE PRO M40 X AR get hang in between and take very long for start up.

It could be possibility that there is a large number of programs on the startup list of the computer that is why it is starting slow. You can try to remove some programs from the startup list by:
Start->Run->msconfig
then on top of the new window click on startup tab and uncheck all the boxes over there and then click OK at the bottom and restart the computer.

Let us know if that helped the computer in speeding up or not. You can also chat with us online at hnetworking.com and if you want then we can take the remote access of the computer to help you better. :-)

My PC Toshiba laptop is running very slow. It's

You need to give more details...
Following are the common methods to increase computer running speed:
- Delete Windows temp files
- Run disk cleanup and defragmenter, this can help you clean junk files, and speed up opening programs and files. If possible, use a third-party programs rather than the built-in system tools, they take really a long time...
- Clean WIndows registry and run defragmenter. This can reduce registry errors and reduce its size, so as to speed up application response. Here is a free registry defrag tool which I feel quite easy to use.

My 1805 is running slow.

It sounds as if you may have spyware of sorts running on your computer slowing it down, possibly a virus or just too many programs running in the background. What are you running as far as Anti-Virus and is that software current (up to date)? You can try some Free downloads to look for and remove that junk from your computer... we use www.superantispyware.com to fix and remove any spyware, malware, trojans, etc. from our PC's. Also, turn off as many programs running in the background as possible and make sure if your on a network (home or office) that is is secured. So that no one outside can piggy back off of you.

Try downloading the following CD to run diagnostics on your hard drive. This should provide further information as to what is wrong with your system: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ It will scan your hardware for problems, as well as have the ability to scan for viruses. If you have the ability to boot into SAFE MODE with Networking, try using the following site for the latest up-to-date scan for viruses and spyware: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Finally, some of your system files may have been corrupted. If the above 2 steps don're resolve the problem, follow the instructions in this article to restore corrupted system files. http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=313
