Question about Hayward Pool & Spa

1 Answer

Just cleaned filters and reinstalled them and the flow is only about a fifth of normal. I noticed that the filter basket on the pump was cracked and was wondering if debris got through if the pump impeller may be plugged. If so is this something that a non-professional can repair? The pump is a Hayward Super II Pump.

How old are the cartridges? They last 2-4 years depending on operating conditions beyond which no amount of cleaning can bring them back.

To check your impeller simply remove the six bolts holding the motor and moving parts of the pump into the housing and pull the motor back out. The diffuser sits over the impeller and it may be there or still in the housing. It aligns over the impeller with pegs and only fits properly in one orientation. If it is over the impeller pull it off and check all the impeller vanes for debris. Clean it if necessary.

If there is nothing in the impeller consider replacing the cartridge or the possibility you now have a clog somewhere else in the plumbing.

I have almost no flow from my Hayward Sand Filter VL40T32. What do I need to do to get the flow back?

Look at your pressure gauge. If it is reading high, you have a clogged filter. Open filter and clean out or replace sand.

If it is reading low, you have a pump/ suction issue. Check the o-ring on the pump basket lid and make sure it is lubed and has no cracks. Check your basket for cracks. The pump impeller could be clogged. The pump may be pulling air in through a suction fitting or a small crack.

Spa indicator says Water SW Open...what does that mean and how do I fix?

This means that the pressure switch is not closing. Generally, this is a lack of water flow issue. The main cause is a dirty filter. Clean cartridges, backwash sand, backwash and recharge DE, whatever is needed to clean the filter, this should fix the problem. If not check other sources of restricted flow: filter baskets, pump baskets, shut-off valves. If everything is clear and there is good flow returning to the pool it could be a bad pressure switch. Replace with the correct switch for your heater.

Clean your filter,...
... just a slight sensing of "Lower" water flow, may trigger the sensor to read not enough water flow. Also check your impeller, your skimmer baskets & the hair and lint pot basket at the pump.
If all those are confirmed as clean & clear - then you may have a faulty flow sensor.

Low flow rate

You probably have debris clogged in the impeller. The pump has to be opened to clean or repair the impeller.

Pressure is low on pump. Water is circulating very slowly. No noise or other problems. Noticed it after we vacumed and back washed. Pump is about 8 years old.

When you vacuum the pool you pick up alot of dirt, etc and this is caught by the filter. The more dirt that goes into the filter the more plugged it becomes until flow slows down. For this reason you need to clean the filter. If the filter is a DE filter it needs to be backwashed and new DE needs to be added to the skimmer basket. If the filter is a cartridge then the cartridge should be removed and washed with a spray jet on a hose. If the filter is a sand filter it should be backwashed. I hope this helps.

I have a 1hp sta-rite above ground pool pump. The pump model number is MPRA6E-147L The pump is about 4 years old, and during our summers it runs about 12 hours a day (May through September) and during...

It sounds like there was a lack of water to the reservoir, which is, I assume the inlet reservoir with the basket strainer in it.
1. Is your water level in the pool high enough to keep the reservoir full?
2. There is an o-ring or gasket on the reservoir cover, is it there and lubricated so there is no air leakage?
3. Put a garden hose into the open reservoir to see if the pump moves this water out.
Do all of this with the filter set to just go back to the pool so you can see the results.
Try this and comment back.
Good Luck,

My filter keeps losing pressure on my de filter to my swimming poolit runs good for about an hour then it slowly decreases

There's a few things to check:
1. Backwash thoroughly and reload your filter with fresh DE.
2. Clean, inspect your pump strainer basket, housing, lid and lid gasket. (also while the pump basket is out, reach into the pump inlet port and check for debris..this can cause what you're experiencing). Remove any debris with your fingers and then reinstall basket, gasket and lid.
3. When putting the gasket and lid on, be sure the gasket isn't hardened, or cracked. Check the lid for damage as well.
4. Check all exposed plastic plumbing for obvious leaks.
Hope this solves your pressure drop... let me know if you need more help.

Spa - Low water flow

Split the pump. if you don't have a leaf/pump basket then your pump inpeller is propably dirty, you'll need a very thin screwdriver to clean the holes inside the impeller
