If both F1 and F2 are not working and your computer is locked up, there is nothing else you can do other than restarting your computer. There may be deeper issues with it if it managed to show that screen in the first place. To restart your computer, hold the power button down, and when it turns back on plug it back in. If that does not work, you may have to resort to unplugging it.

How can i have the password bios of laptop dell E6420

f you are running Dell servers, it is recommended to enable BIOS password. This is will prevent accidental changes done to Dell BIOS settings by others who get physical access to the server.

You can setup two different types of passwords in Dell BIOS:

System Password: This will be prompted before the system can boot up, and load the operating system.
Setup password: The system will prompt for this password only when you are trying to access the BIOS settings.

Depending on your situation, it might be a good idea to enable both the system and setup password at the BIOS level. I recommend that you at least enable BIOS password.
Press F2 for System Setup

When the Dell server is booting up, press F2 to start system setup, from where you can change Dell BIOS settings.

BIOS System Security

From the Dell BIOS main menu, scroll down to "System Security" and press enter.

Password Not Enabled

From here, you can see that both the System and Setup password is not enabled by default.

Enable System Password (and Setup Password)

Scroll to "System Password" and press enter, which will prompt you to enter the password that you like to set for the system. Please understand that if you set this password, you have to enter this password everytime you start the system. Do the same thing for Setup Password.

Don't forget this bios password. If you forget, then you have go through the painful process of resetting the Dell BIOS password.
Password is Enabled

Once you've enabled both the password, from the "System Security" menu, you'll see that that both system and setup password is enabled as shown below.

password is set

System Password Prompt (During Startup)

From now-onwards, anytime you start the system, it will not load the operating system, unless you specify the system password as shown below.

Setup Password Prompt (To Access BIOS)

If you press F2, to get to the BIOS, it will prompt for the setup password as shown below. If you don't enter a valid password here, you cannot access the Dell BIOS settings anymore.

Installed new bios for windows 7, not working,on start up, computer locks up, able to unlock- but didn't happen with original bios. Looking for old bios to re install sholder012001@yahoo.com

o open the BIOS Setup screen: Reloading the BIOS default settings To reload the factory BIOS settings to the setup default:
  1. Press the F5 function key.
  2. Select Yes or OK.
  3. Press the Enter key.
  4. Press the F10 function key.
  5. Select Yes or OK to save the defaults.
You can also complete the following steps to reload the factory BIOS settings using the menu:
  1. In the BIOS Setup utility, select the Exit tab.
  2. Select Load Setup Defaults.
  3. The system prompts you to load the optimized setup defaults. Select Yes or OK and press the Enter key.
  4. Select Exit Saving Changes.
  5. Press Esc and then press Enter to exit Setup.
Please don't forget to rate this if it fixed your problem. Four thumbs up is basically what means your problem was solved. Anything less means your problem was not solved. Not sure people here understand that as far as how we get rated.

I have some problem on my PC which is running window XP pro. When I switch on my pc. It will prompt me the message below: ''Overclocking failed. Please enter setup to re-configure your system. Press F1...

The BIOS settings are wrong. Press F1 when the pc starts to enter in the BIOS then on there you will see the Load default settings option: select it, Save and Exit. If the problem isn't fixed then you have some jumpers on the motherboard that are switched wrongly - take them all out and try again.

What is the boot up sequence please

You need to go inside BIOS to find out whats the boot sequence. To activate the BIOS Utility, press F2 during POST (when “Press <F2> to enter Setup” message is prompted on the bottom of screen).
Press F2 to enter setup. The default parameter of F12 Boot Menu is set to “disabled”. If you want to change boot device without entering BIOS Setup Utility, please set the parameter to “enabled”.
Press <F12> during POST to enter multi-boot menu. In this menu, user can change boot device without entering BIOS SETUP Utility. Navigate to BOOT page on top.

Hope this helps!

Everytime we boot up our computer it says press f1 to do something and f2 to enter setup mode?

generally an indication that something is wrong in the system setup. Press F2 and enter setup, check the time and date settings and the system event log (If BIOS has one) for incorrect settings, also check and see if the BIOS shows a hard drive installed.

If time and are wrong, set them to correct and save settings. If system keeps losing time and date after power is removed, then the backup battery may need to be replaced.

If HDD is not detected, then reseat it. If still not detected replace it.

Unable to get to CMOS using any of the 3 methods

This machine is one of the first "legacy free" models which means there are no BIOS options to change. All settings and resources must be assigned by the OS.
For details, please check the "legacy free" FAQ on MS Knowledge base.
If you are trying to access the BIOS to change boot order so that you can boot from a CD, hold down the 'c' key during POST/boot. This will case your laptop to boot from CD-ROM.
